Winnipeg Walk for Human Rights · Hosted by Brian Bowman
Please join me and many others as we walk in solidarity to show our support for diversity, inclusion, and human rights.

Winnipeg today is a growing, diverse city. Our compassion, diversity, and acceptance of new people and cultures are what make us strong. Now, more than ever, is a time for compassion. It is a time for us to embrace our values of openness, acceptance, and diversity, and it is a time to ensure fear does not triumph over hope and humanity.

As part of RMTC’s ChristieFest, this special benefit reading of A Murder is Announced will take place with 11 of Winnipeg’s best actors. And you, the audience, get the chance to sleuth along with Miss Marple.

The residents of Chipping Cleghorn are intrigued by an ominous announcement in the town gazette. Is there really going to be a murder that evening? Miss Marple, among others, cannot resist finding out. Many clues, twists, and turns later, Miss Marple solves the crime, showing that seniors can be canny mystery solvers.
A brief intermission gives the audience the chance to guess "whodunnit" and one lucky detective will be awarded a copy of Christie's biography.

PAL Winnipeg is a not for profit, registered charitable organization dedicated to providing affordable housing and support services for older members of our community, particularly those in the performing and allied professions.

John K. Samson celebrates the release of second solo album Winter Wheat
Inspired by the search for connection and community, his hometown of Winnipeg, and our individual and collective struggles with addictions, John K. Samson’s Winter Wheat is a sprawling, masterful and timely work by a writer at the peak of his powers.

Winter Wheat was produced in garages and homes through a challenging Winnipeg winter by Samson’s partner and collaborator, Christine Fellows, and his Weakerthans co-founder and drummer/multi-instrumentalist Jason Tait, and mixed in the spring in Toronto by Robbie Lackritz (Bahamas, Feist). The spare and thoughtful arrangements also feature Greg Smith of The Weakerthans on electric bass, Ashley Au on double and electric bass, Leanne Zacharias on cello, and Shotgun Jimmie on electric guitar.

Songwriter Christine Fellows will be opening. Christine and John were recently named Writers-in-Residence at the Winnipeg Public Library for 2016-2017.
Christine released Burning Daylight in 2014; this beautiful album and its companion book were her sixth full-length album and first collection of poetry respectively.

Monochrome Fall Fundraising Dinner and skills auction
Hosted by MAWA Mentoring Artists for Women's Art

MAWA’s fall supper is back … the costumed and culinary event of the year! Dress in a single hue and dine on infinite deliciousness, including vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options. Featuring an all-you-can eat buffet, fortune telling, performances and more! Plus you can bid on some of the many skills possessed by the MAWA community.

Monochrome is being held in support of MAWA’s Legacy Fund at the Winnipeg Foundation. Our aim is to grow this pot of money so we will be able to pay for the Foundation Mentorship Program. The fund has grown from less than $500 seven years ago to $57,990.

Please, if you have a skill that you’d like us to auction, drop Alison a note. We’d really appreciate your contribution of talent! This year we’ll also be auctioning experiences, so if you are willing to loan your cabin for a weekend or offer a playdate with your kittens, MAWA is most grateful for those contributions, too.

"Sounding Thunder: The Stories of Francis Pegahmagabow"
Dr. Brian McInnes
Department of Native Studies 2016-2017 Colloquium Series

Francis Pegahmagabow (1889–1952) was an Anishinaabe born in Shawanaga, Ontario. Enlisting in the First World War, he became the most decorated Canadian Indigenous soldier for bravery and the most accomplished sniper in North American military history.

After the war, Pegahmagabow settled in Wasauksing, Ontario. He served his community as both chief and councillor and belonged to the Brotherhood of Canadian Indians. Francis also recorded many stories describing many parts of his life in a classic Ojibwe narrative.

Join scholar and Indigenous language advocate Brian McInnes as he provides valuable insights on Francis’s words and world. Presented in their original Ojibwe, as well as in English translation, the stories also reveal a rich and evocative relationship to the lands and waters of Georgian Bay. Buy a copy of the book

Brian D. McInnes, a faculty member in the Department of Education at the University of Minnesota Duluth, is an advocate for and speaker of Anishinaabemowin. A member of the Wasauksing First Nation, Brian is a great-grandson of Francis Pegahmagabow. Sounding Thunder is his first book.

Samhain - New Year’s Open Circle
You and yours are cordially summoned by witches and ancestors to celebrate and clear the way for the new year. Come and help us turn the wheel in the old way; with ritual, song, dance and feasting.
This is an entirely pop up event. Dress warmly and bring anything you need: folding chairs, drums, instruments. We will be providing hot chocolate and cookies. Bakers welcome to contribute. Festival dress and costume encouraged.

This year we combine our celebration with public outreach. We will set out from the park before ritual to sweep the neighbourhood in the four directions. We are preparing a hand out scroll that will be informative. It will be available for you for download and printing if you'd like to use it at your family parties, or at the door for trick and treaters.

There will be a broom making workshop the weekend before. Collect plant materials to use to make brooms. Masks and lanterns may be included in the workshop and volunteers to help with children’s craft making for ritual are encouraged to contact the planning group. Craft supplies (ribbon, twine, flexible cardboard, glue, feathers) are being collected.

Brooms will be used in a dance during circle. Simple steps will be demonstrated. There will be safe space for those who are not dancing. If you aren't able to come make a broom bring one from home. Decorate it if you want, or just bring it as is.

We call on you to remember and honour the ancestors of this land, the Anishinaabe, along with your departed. Blessed be

September 10, 7:30 to 11 pm & September 11, 2:00 to 5:00 pm
Mary Jane’s Cooking School, 252 Arlington Street

Over the years to celebrate my birthday, I've raised awareness of and funds for a number of charities and organizations close to my heart. This year I've chosen to raise money for Mary Jane's Cooking School (MJCS) which provides education in nutritional home cooking in harmony with individual community and cultural traditions, with respect and care for the environment. Mary Jane Eason is a trail blazer who continues to give her time and knowledge to the community.

Mary Jane’s Cooking School has provided education in both drop-in classes and formal class settings. Some classes have met off-site, at such locations as St. Margaret’s and Holy Trinity Anglican churches, at the Saigon Centre of the Free Vietnamese Association, and in the West End Senior Centre.
With the assistance of Native elders, MJCS includes program information and activities particularly relating to aboriginal culture and spirituality.

Tax receipts will be issued for any donation above $10.
Cheques should be made payable to Mary Jane's Cooking School and sent to 252 Arlington Street, Winnipeg, Mb, R3G 1Y8.

Light refreshments will be served. If you can come by for a visit, I'd love to see you. If you can't make it, I'd very much appreciate your contribution. Thank you. Merci beaucoup. ~ Janine Le Gal
