This walk raises funds for research that leads to better treatments and brings us closer to a cure every day.

Crohn’s Disease affects over 129,000 people across Canada, with over 5,700 new cases diagnosed every year.  It is more than twice as common as multiple sclerosis or Parkinson’s disease, and just as common as diabetes or epilepsy.
People with Crohn’s face life with debilitating physical symptoms, social stigma, and mental health concerns.  Risk of premature death is 47% higher than that of the general public.

It’s time to overcome the stigma of living with Crohn’s, and raise awareness.

aceartinc., 290 McDermot

Open City Cinema & aceartinc. present the animated works of Jessica MacCormack and the Winnipeg launch of her illustrated book The See.
Artist Jessica MacCormack in attendance!

MacCormack dramatizes the kinds of hallucinations that one’s mind is forced to create when one is unable to face – or even conceive of – an experienced trauma. This state of daydreaming is more akin to a nightmare: visual manifestations of past abuses and indignities that can’t show their real forms can only shift in and out of legibility.

Jessica MacCormack’s recent works integrate animation, video, painting and collage in social interventions and community productions that explore issues of criminalization, HIV/AIDS, racism, transphobia, sexual assault and mental health.

Admission is FREE.  Reservations are suggested.

Set: Jamie Plummer
Costumes: Joseph Abetria
Lighting: Tim Babcock and Jacqueline Robertson

The Laramie Project, by MoisĂ©s Kaufman and The Tectonic Theater Company, was written following the savage beating of a gay college student, Matthew Shepard, on the outskirts of Laramie, Wyoming. It chronicles the community’s effort to redefine itself following Matthew’s death, and portrays the residents dealing with their anger, their own misgivings, and the onslaught of media scrutiny that broadly labeled the community as intolerant.

This is a timely piece in light of recent headlines from Russia and Uganda to Arizona.
In rural Manitoba recent events have exposed concerns about intolerance toward the LGBT community. The closure of a restaurant in Morris and a Steinbach high school student’s fight with the school board to start a Gay-Straight Alliance have drawn national attention.

However, once the media glare fades away, these communities are left to resolve the lingering divisions among the residents on their own.

The heart is a muscle the size of a fist, keep loving, keep fighting

This project aims to explore our love and respect for women, our recognition of their resilience, strength, struggles and power. It works to combat gendered violence and sexism by celebrating, reinforcing and acknowledging the inherent value, resilience, struggles, and strength of the women we know.

This is a call to respond against sexism, violence, and hate that women experience. While women are often objectified, this project will work to celebrate women as whole, bringing the pieces together.

Our use of the word "women" includes all those who identify as a woman and to acknowledge all the differences within that term.

Seven women decide that making art is more fun than making dinner. They turn their passion and creativity towards painting. Each follows her own inner voice, painting what is important to her. Abstraction reigns, landscapes and figures appear. Oil and cold wax, acrylic, pastel, graphite!!

Originally suggested in 2010 by Deborah Stacey, former member of the Group of 8 Artist Salon, who passed away from cancer in 2011. We dedicate this show to her memory.

Introduction By Author Kier la Janisse
W/ David Cronenberg's 1979 classic The Brood

OPEN CITY CINEMA and the WFG Cinematheque present an unforgettable evening with legendary film programmer and horror writer Kier la Janisse as she returns to launch her highly acclaimed new book House of Psychotic Women, an autobiographical and highly personal exploration of female neurosis in horror and exploitation films.

This sharply-designed book with a 32-page full-colour section is packed with rare stills, posters, pressbooks and artwork, with a filmography that traverses the acclaimed and the obscure.  It will be available for sale in the Lobby both before and after the screening.
