Columbus · Hosted by Winnipeg Architecture
When a renowned architecture scholar falls suddenly ill during a speaking tour, his son Jin (John Cho) finds himself stranded in Columbus, Indiana - a small Midwestern city celebrated for its many significant modernist buildings. Jin strikes up a friendship with Casey (Haley Lu Richardson), a young architecture enthusiast who works at the local library. As their intimacy develops, Jin and Casey explore both the town and their conflicted emotions: Jin's estranged relationship with his father, and Casey's reluctance to leave Columbus and her mother.

Debut director Kogonada's Columbus unfolds as a gently drifting, deeply absorbing conversation. With strong supporting turns from Parker Posey, Rory Culkin, and Michelle Forbes, Columbus is also a showcase for its director's striking eye for the way physical space can affect emotions.

Bouffon Workshop with Eric Davis
Find your critical fun as we seek laughter through explosive parody, strange bodies, and a nudge from the devil himself. In the world of Bouffon, the audience is the joke. To play as Bouffon is to celebrate paradox!

Eric Davis has been teaching and performing professionally for 20 years. He was the lead clown for Cirque du Soleil’s Iris (he originated the role) as well as the clown for Cirque du Soleil’s Quidam. He is a recipient of the NYC Golden Nose Award. His bouffon show, Red Bastard, was named top 5 shows in the U.K. and received a whopping TWELVE 5-star reviews at Edinburgh Fringe.

You loved 'em at the Fest, so we're bringing Ben Caplan and The Casual Smokers back.
As Ben Caplan releases his second album, he’s already gained a following from Australia to Europe and across North America. Caplan’s rough and textured tones cut through crowded halls; an enormous voice, roaring louder than raucous crowds. Once he has your attention, Caplan can croon smoother than a glass of single malt whisky.

“Sounding Thunder: The Stories of Francis Pegahmagabow"

Francis Pegahmagabow (1889–1952) was an Anishinaabe born in Shawanaga, Ontario. Enlisting at the onset of the First World War, he became the most decorated Canadian Indigenous soldier for bravery and the most accomplished sniper in North American military history. After the war Pegahmagabow served his community, Wasauksing, as both chief and councillor and belonged to the Brotherhood of Canadian Indians. Francis also recorded many stories about his life in a classic Ojibwe narrative.

Scholar and Indigenous language advocate Brian McInnes provides insights on Francis’s words and world. Presented in their original Ojibwe, as well as in English translation, the stories reveal a rich relationship to the lands and waters of Georgian Bay.

Brian D. McInnes, a faculty member in the Department of Education at the University of Minnesota Duluth, is a great-grandson of Francis Pegahmagabow. Sounding Thunder is his first book. Buy a copy

Architecture+Film Series - A Little Chaos
Hosted by Winnipeg Architecture

Set in 1682, this visually splendid and “thoroughly pleasant” romantic drama tells the story of Sabine de Barra (Kate Winslet), a talented and strong-willed landscape designer who succeeds in challenging both gender and class stereotypes by building one of the main gardens at the Palace of Versailles for the Sun King, Louis XIV (comically portrayed by actor/director, Alan Rickman).
This opportunity leads her down a path of professional and romantic entanglements with the prodigiously cunning André Le Nôtre (b.1613-d.1700). Supporting roles well played by Stanley Tucci and (Harry Potter star) Helen McCrory.

Compelling throat singer from Nunavut, Tanya Tagaq
Her lecture will focus on the importance of the arts for the public good, including how Indigenous artists contribute to conversations about processes of reconciliation.

Recently appointed as a Member of the Order of Canada, Tagaq’s music and performance are a complex protest that links lack of respect for women’s rights to lack of respect for the planet, to lack of respect for Indigenous rights. The Arctic-born artist is an improvisational performer, avant-garde composer and experimental recording artist who won the 2014 Polaris Music Prize for an album called Animism. Her critically acclaimed follow-up, Retribution, is an even more powerful masterpiece.
