CN 2747 Enclosure Project Capital Campaign

Help support the development of a permanent structure over this important historical asset in the community of Transcona.

The main purpose of the enclosure is to have the engine protected from the elements, vandalism, and theft. CN 2747 has been on outdoor display since 1960 and this has caused damage to the overall condition and stability of the engine. An enclosure will help to extend the lifespan of the engine. The estimated construction costs are $492,942.

Join photographer Chris Attrell and author Christine Hanlon for the virtual launch of the photograph collection Grain Elevators: Beacons of the Prairies.

On YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhzzziVg49M

Rising above the landscape, the grain elevator heralds a time when wheat was king across the West. At their zenith, 5,758 of these prairie giants defined the economy and skyline of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta.
Every year their numbers dwindle. Sometimes these towering signposts are all that is left of a town or hamlet once built around them. Award-winning photographer Chris Attrell captures the haunting presence of those that remain to stand guard over an ever-changing agrarian lifestyle.

Chris Attrell is the author of the bestselling book, Forgotten Saskatchewan. His work has been shown in galleries across the Prairies.
Christine Hanlon is the bestselling author of Old Winnipeg, Out of Old Manitoba Kitchens, co-author of The Manitoba Book of Everything, and curator/writer for Everything Manitoba: The Ultimate Book of Lists.

Gala for Literacy 2021

This gala event is all about supporting the literacy of men in conflict with the law.
Studies show that when individuals work on their literacy, they are less likely to re-offend. Plus, they’re better equipped to find housing, land a job or secure social services.

The money raised from this celebrity-endorsed event goes directly to our Literacy Department, and aids in our work with men on the inside and outside.
CBC humourist, Rick Mercer, is the main host, with segments hosted by former CBC Radio host, Terry MacLeod.
Katherena Vermette, our Poet Laureate for this year, will join us and read a few of her poems.
We will also give special recognition to one outstanding student and a pair of teachers.
Twin Flames, Stephen Fearing and Ashley MacIsaac will each perform for us.
And we’ll hear award-winning author Louise Penny read from a best-selling book.

The Literacy Program at the John Howard Society of Manitoba provides one-to-one assistance with reading, problem solving and mathematics in Winnipeg's Remand Centre and at several correctional facilities in the province. In pre-Covid times, we trained incarcerated men to become peer tutors. During Covid we offer instruction via Zoom.

In our Get The Story Out program, we record fathers reading stories for their children and then deliver the book to the child's parent or caregiver.

Havana, from on high, Directed by Pedro Ruiz
2018, Canada, 80 minutes, Spanish with English subtitles

High above the streets of Central Havana, some of its poorest citizens are forced into rooftop homes by a chronic city-wide housing shortage. With the help of stunning cinematography and inspired soundscapes, Ruiz skillfully interweaves these stories to create a vibrant tapestry of a city and country once again in the grips of major upheaval.
Cinematheque is at 50% capacity and allowing folks who are fully vaccinated.

Qaumajuq's inaugural exhibition is historic in itself. For the first time ever, a curatorial team represents all four regions of Inuit Nunangat: Dr. Heather Igloliorte, asinnajaq, Krista Ulujuk Zawadski, and Kablusiak.
INUA has two meanings: spirit or life force; and an acronym for Inuit Nunangat Ungammuaktut Atautikkut, or “Inuit moving forward together”.
The show features more than 90 Inuit artists working across the Arctic and urban centres. New commissions alongside works from the WAG’s world-renowned collection of Inuit art span generations of artists.

Manitoba 150 exists to shine a light on all that makes Manitoba amazing and unique – our beauty, people, cultures, and history. With support from Réseau Compassion Network, Le Musée de Saint-Boniface Museum – home to the world’s largest collection of Louis Riel artifacts, is offering free admission to individuals and families throughout 2021.

The Grey Nuns’ convent, Winnipeg’s oldest building, houses Le Musée de Saint-Boniface Museum. Built for the Grey Nuns who arrived in the Red River Colony in 1844, the structure is an outstanding example of Red River frame construction. The Museum presents an impressive collection of artifacts that reveal the lives and culture of the Francophone and Métis communities of Manitoba, including a special exhibit about Louis Riel, the “father” of Manitoba.

Open City Cinema presents:
Barry Doupé’s The Colors that Combine to Make White are Important
April 9 l Doors at 7
Video Pool, 100 Arthur Street, 3rd Floor
$5.00

Vancouver animator Barry Doupé explores the power structure within a failing Japanese glass factory. Two parallel storylines — one involving the investigation of a suspect employee, the other a stolen painting — converge in an exposition on gender and desire. Doupé’s computer-animated characters evolve through three distinct acts, looking for something to be found through a crisis of feeling.

Alluding to the office comedy 9 to 5 (1980), Yasujiro Ozu’s staid, heartwarming Good Morning (1959), and Luchino Visconti’s sexually-charged finale in Death in Venice (1971), Colors shifts between cultural reference points.

Preceeded by a selection of short films picked by Barry Doupé, featuring the work of:
Marina Roy
Sharon Kahanoff
Tamara Henderson
Aleesa Cohene

Barry Doupé's films have been screened at various venues, including the Ann Arbor Film Festival, International Film Festival Rotterdam, Pleasure Dome and MOCCA (Toronto), Whitechapel Gallery and the Tate Modern (London).

Robert Kroetsch

McNally Robinson, Grant Park
Monday, July 11 - 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm

The Manitoba Writers’ Guild joins with others in grieving the passing of acclaimed novelist and poet Robert Kroetsch.

The noted writer was killed on Tuesday, June 21, in a car crash east of Leduc, Alberta, while returning home from the Artspeak poetry festival in Canmore.

The Studhorse Man brought him to the forefront of Canadian contemporary literature.
It won the Governor General’s Literary Award and established him as a humourist and commentator on prairie life.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Kroetsch published a series of poetry that he gathered in what he called Field Notes. The most popular of these was Seed Catalogue
Kroetsch was also known for his venturesome critical essays about writing.

Kroestch's most recent published work of poetry was Too Bad, subtitled "Sketches Toward a Self-Portrait." It was Kroetsch’s exploration of autobiography as an imperfect method of documenting life.

Kroetsch was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2004 for his contributions to Canadian culture.
He received the Lieutenant Governor’s Alberta Distinguished Artist Award this spring, and the Golden Pen Award last month.

A generous and affirming man, Kroetsch showed a rare combination of wonder and sophistication, rejoicing in discovery, and supporting what others were doing.

Maurice Mierau & MWG Mentorship Reading

Aqua Books is pleased to be the permanent home of the venerable poetry series
Speaking Crow. The Crow starts on Tuesday, June 7, at 7:00 pm and is followed by two open-mic sets and short breaks in between.

Maurice Mierau is the author of two books of poetry: Ending with Music and Fear Not, which won the prestigious ReLit award for poetry in 2009. He is also the editor for the new online magazine The Winnipeg Review.

Mierau’s work exemplifies a bitter illustration of and a desperate railing against a fallen human world filled with catastrophic violence. His powerful poems, lyric but also given to being conceptual, set up a negotiation between some of humanity’s most compassionate philosophies and those most ungovernable emotions. What is presented throughout is a desire to muck defiantly through human harms toward a state of living in dignity and peaceably.
