For 150 years the Winnipeg Free Press has remained a staunchly independent news source and now, in celebration of this historic anniversary, Headlines: The Art of the News Cycle, explores the news and how we consume it.
I started with the idea of news itself, news media in the 21st century, right now – and what are artists thinking about in relation to this? I looked to artists first, says Symko.
The exhibition draws on these critical ideas, which include artworks made from the news and newsprint, as well as works that explore headlines and obituaries and, of course, fake news.
Headlines will contextualize the art on display with exhibition design that mimics a newsroom.

Happy Thirteenth Anniversary to us!! - Margaret Ullrich

Happy Anniversary to Winnipeg is Better Than Chocolate and to you, its readers!
Thank you for visiting, whether you’re a regular or a ‘new to you’ visitor.
Also, a huge thank you to everyone who has told their friends about Winnipeg.

Due to Covid-19, this has been a strange year, just like 2020 and 2021.
But slowly we’ve been getting back to normal.
Stay safe and well!

Since 2009 there have been about 545,800 visitors.
For the first few years Canada was the number one country for visitors.
Well, a few years ago people from the United States became the top visitors.
I hope it’s meant that folks in the States are curious about what we have here.
Maybe they will come for a vacation, or at least come up to see a show or to take part in an event, such as Folklorama.
Folks in the States know that they can get a great bang for their vacation buck here.

Germany, Russia and the Ukraine are still among the top five countries.
Hope you'll be coming to Winnipeg to enjoy great events here, too.
The Philippines is still one of the top ten visiting countries.
I’m not surprised. Winnipeg has a large, vibrant Philippine community.
Maybe people have decided to see a few shows while visiting family and friends.

These are the places where our top twenty visitors come from:
United States………….. 189       K
Canada……………..………101       K
Germany……..……..……. 63.9    K
Russia…………..…..……… 47.5    K
Ukraine.……….....…….. 20       K
France……………….……… 16.3    K
Unknown Region…….…. 7.7     K
Philippines……………….…. 5.68   K
United Kingdom….……… 5.39   K
Netherlands.……….……… 5.01   K
Japan….…….….……………..4.11   K
China….…….….……………..3.26   K
Sweden….…….….………….2.61   K
Brazil….…….….…….……….2.52   K
Poland….…….….…………….2.35  K
Slovenia….…….….………….1.98  K
Indonesia….…….….……….1.86  K
Romania….…….….…………1.75  K
Spain….…….….…….….……1.38  K
Other….…….….…….……..62.3    K

Visitors from Unknown Region and Other are dropping in to see what’s happening.
I don't know where these visitors live.
Oh, well, hello to you, wherever you call home.

During the years there have also been visitors from Moldova, Turkey, Ireland, Australia, Singapore, Taiwan, Argentina, Denmark, Eritrea, Italy, Finland, the Netherlands, Spain, Macedonia (FYROM), Mexico, Afghanistan, Thailand, Slovakia, India, Bangladesh, Israel, Malaysia, Kuwait, Greece, Kenya, Vietnam, Czech Republic, Portugal, Bulgaria, Romania, United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, Armenia, Belarus, Namibia, Honduras, Slovenia, Lithuania, Indonesia, Turkmenistan, Cambodia, Switzerland, Czechia, Bermuda, Portugal, Qatar, Brazil, Egypt, Chile, Poland, Nigeria, South Africa, Iraq, Sweden, Côte d’Ivoire, Japan, Serbia, Libya, Dominican Republic, Togo, Saudi Arabia, Albania, Hong Kong, Malta, Seychelles, Morocco, Peru, Belarus, Cyprus and Austria.

Usually I only post once or twice a month, especially since Covid-19 became a part of our lives.
Please become a subscriber to the blog Winnipeg is Better Than Chocolate.
It’s easy and FREE - just click on the FOLLOW link under the pictures of followers and post your email address.
Free, easy, and, I promise, your address will never be shared with anyone.
You’ll get an email when there is a new post, so you'll never miss news about an event.

I don’t post on Facebook but I do post a link on Twitter whenever there is a new post.
If you feel more comfortable using Twitter, just click on the Twitter link @ImTurning60 on the side bar above my picture and we’ll be able to keep in touch that way.

I do notice which posts get the most visits.
Posts about classes (both in-person and online), sales (especially seasonal and craft), fundraisers for dog and cat rescue centres, live music, family activities, Winnipeg Architecture Foundation events and walks, and Writers’ events and launches have been popular.
I’ll continue posting more of those, and similar, events.

Please take a moment and comment when you have enjoyed an event.
Local musicians and writers check when they’re in the media and they love the feedback.

Once again, thank you so much for visiting!
As I said when Sophie and I signed off our weekly show...
Have a great weekend. How can you miss - you're in Winnipeg!

The imposing five-dome church is partially modeled on Kyiv, Ukraine’s Saint Sophia Cathedral and took nearly 14 years to build. Work began in 1949 based on a design by Green Blankstein Russell. A fire in 2016 caused extensive damage, which has now been repaired.
The church is accessible by an elevator on the North side of the building. Use the parking area at St. Johns Park fence. Masks are encouraged. Registration is required.

Located north of Fermor Avenue, south of the Windsor Park Golf Course and adjacent to the Seine River, Niakwa Park is a park-like neighbourhood developed in the 1950s. The area’s homes were designed by Nicola Zunic, a 1950 graduate of the UofM School of Architecture.
Niakwa Park was deemed a “High Class” project and described as “the most exclusive development in Western Canada” containing “Manitoba’s No. 1 Home” - a building that was featured in the August 1956 issue of Canadian Homes and Gardens.
This tour follows a wheelchair and stroller accessible route.
