 McNally Robinson Booksellers Events
Live in the Atrium of McNally Robinson Booksellers, Grant Park

May 1, 7 pm - 8 pm

Join us for a special evening celebrating Road to Justice by Art Miki, illustrated by Geoff Miki. Featuring a conversation hosted by Fortunato Lim, followed by a book signing. This event sponsored by the Asian Heritage Society of Manitoba in celebration of Asian Heritage Month.
Available as a YouTube stream: https://www.youtube.com/live/XsNWqnicTsI

Art Miki was five years old in May 1942, when the Canadian government forced him and his family to leave their home in British Columbia because they were Japanese. As part of a special law that gave the government extra power during wartime, thousands of Japanese people in Canada were interned during the Second World War, which meant they lost their homes.
Art worked with other Japanese Canadians to make the government answer for the injustice of internment. After a lot of hard work and collaboration, they finally achieved redress for the wrongs that had been done to them. Recognizing that his family’s experience was one of many human rights violations in Canada, Art helped other groups fight for their rights, too.

Art Miki is a community leader, human rights activist and was a teacher, elementary school principal, citizenship judge and author of Gaman – Perseverance: Japanese Canadians’ Journey to Justice. Geoff Miki is an artist with his main focus on drawing, painting and printmaking.

Fortunato Lim is the President of the Asian Heritage Society of Manitoba and has been an educator for over 20 years. He currently serves as the Divisional Principal of Anti-Racism Initiatives for Seven Oaks School Division. Born in the Philippines and of Chinese and Filipino heritage, Fortunato moved to Canada in 1989.

Set in Torduvalle, Saskatchewan, 1946, this story explores the repercussions of a woman’s decision to hide her Métis identity while living in a small, predominantly white prairie town.
This novel asks us what we will do for our community, for our families, for our friends, even at our own expense. It examines the harrowing effects of choosing to live as someone else, and the radiant peace that comes from finally living one’s truth.

Tara Gereaux is the author of ‘Saltus’, which was shortlisted for the 2022 ReLit Novel Award and three Saskatchewan Book Awards; and ‘Size of a Fist’, a teen novella, which was shortlisted for two Saskatchewan Book Awards.

Also available as a YouTube stream: https://youtube.com/live/KkT2PojPgt0

Tracey Lindberg and artist George Littlechild consider a teaching from an Elder that in their culture love, as constructed in Western society, does not exist. Through fiction and select paintings, they respond, inspiring readers to recall responsibilities to relations, to think about the obligation that is love, and to imagine what it means to have no word for love.

Tracey Lindberg is a citizen of As’in’i’wa’chi Ni’yaw Nation Rocky Mountain Cree from the Kelly Lake Cree Nation community. She is an award-winning academic writer and a professor of law. She is the author of ‘Birdie’, which was shortlisted for CBC’s Canada Reads, the Kobo Emerging Writer Prize, and the Georges Bugnet Award for Fiction and longlisted for the International Dublin Literary Award.
