A & O Support Services for Older Adults

According to Manitoba Provincial Department of Health, Seniors and Active Living in Manitoba falls are the number one cause of hospitalization and death. Almost 66 per cent or 42,377 falls required hospitalization for those 65 years of age and older. The number of those injured from a fall increases with age and doubles after 75 years of age.

Our SafetyAid Falls Prevention team will come to your home and conduct safety and falls prevention audit and provide some safety tips to make your home safer. If you are concerned that an older adult you know may need assistance from this program, visit our website at https://www.aosupportservices.ca/…/safety-securi…/safetyaid/
or call A & O at 204-956-6440.
It takes a community to prevent a fall. We all have a role to play.
*

A & O works with Home Instead Senior Care and various community groups to identify socially isolated or in-need older adults who might not otherwise receive gifts this holiday season.

Gift requests are typically items like robes, sweaters, warm socks or puzzle books. Oftentimes participants ask for needs, such as toiletries, toilet paper or pet food.
A & O then works with community donors and volunteers to help facilitate the purchase and distribution of requested gifts.
Each gift request (maximum $25) is written on a Be a Santa to a Senior tree ornament.
To find a location nearest you visit www.beasantawinnipeg.com
If you can assist with picking gifts please contact Home Instead at Jeannette.brigit@homeinstead.com

If you would like to enquire about other volunteer opportunities please call
A&O Support Services to Seniors at 204-956-6440.

Home Instead Senior Care is also working with the ALS society to raise nutritional drinks (Boost/Ensure) through our “Give a Boost” campaign.

Main Street Project has officially launched its $2.5 million dollar capital campaign. ‘It’s Time, Winnipeg’ is a major fundraising effort to help redevelop the agency’s newly acquired space at 637 Main Street, in what was formerly Mitchell Fabrics.

Main Street Project will renovate the building into a state of the art, low-barrier shelter that will meet the needs of Winnipeg’s most vulnerable citizens, including those experiencing homelessness, mental health issues and addictions-related struggles.

When completed, MSP’s shelter capacity will jump from 85 people sleeping on floor mats in 2100 square feet, to 150 people sleeping on beds in 36 thousand square feet of space. The shelter will feature wrap around supports and will be accessible 24-hours a day.

Main Street Project needs to raise $2.5 million dollars so that we can make all of this a reality by December, 2019. Please visit www.mainstreetproject.ca/capital-campaign/ to donate and learn more about how you can help.

The holiday season is quickly approaching and we are thrilled to announce our second annual holiday gift drive here at Main Street Project. Last year’s gift drive went so well, and we think this year will be even bigger and better, but we need your help.
Join us this holiday season as we aim to gather enough donated items to put together 250 gifts packages. Our hope is for each of our community members to have their own gift to open on the morning of December 25th.
Please visit our website to learn more about how you can help with this initiative:

At Women’s Health Clinic (WHC) freedom of expression and the right to protest are important to us. In fact, much of our advocacy work is founded on those very principles. It’s been said that a recent call for buffer zone legislation may violate people’s right to free speech and protest.

But the proposed legislation doesn’t do that.

We believe every Manitoban has the right to be able to access the health care services they need - including the right to do so safely and confidentially - and without judgment or intimidation. Buffer zones protect THAT right. Those who wish to protest abortion can still exercise their right to do so in many different ways, and in many different places. (See our infographic for some alternatives.)

Let’s be clear. We’re not against free speech and the right to protest. But we do want protesters to understand that when they occupy sidewalks leading to health care facilities, they are intimidating and compromising confidentiality for folks trying to access any number of health services. In our case, people come to our clinic for reproductive care, eating disorder workshops, support programs for parents, and mental health counselling. Quite simply, we support buffer zone legislation because we support the right of every Manitoban to receive safe and confidential health care.

So by all means, feel free to voice your opinion.
Just do so down the street.

108 SUN Salutations: Winter Solstice Karma Class
At noon on the Winter Solstice, the sun reaches its highest position in the sky. It is the shortest day and longest night of the year. The Solstice is a good time for reflection, the heavy darkness an invitation to be still and look inward before the slow build toward longer days and the promise of spring.

You are invited to ignite the change in seasons with a 108 Sun Salutations practice led by Shivaun Berg. This practice is suitable for all levels and, though challenging, can be calming and restorative. It's not about perfect form or maximum effort, but about moving efficiently and smoothly with the breath. Child's pose (balasana) is always an option.

There is a sense of enchantment visiting artists in their spaces and connecting the ways ideas are expressed in different forms.
The exhibition brings together work from artists based in Winnipeg or with Winnipeg roots. Artists Ian August and Irene Bindi researched pieces from the WAG collection to inform and influence new works created for this show that unveil layers of knowledge and material.

Prairie Modernist Noir: The Disappearance of the Manitoba Telephone Booth
by Jeanne Randolph
In rural Manitoba the telephone booth is often the only mid-century modernist structure in the landscape. A building where only one person stands inside will someday seem quaint. These structures played a significant role in pop culture and symbolically, in their day, were emblems of modern technology.
Jeanne Randolph has been writing, performing for, and contributing to Canadian contemporary visual arts since 1980. Five books of her collected art-writings have been published since 1991.

Also As Well Too is an artist-run, not-for-profit library and shop for artist books and small press publications.

WINNER of the 2018 Toronto Fringe Best New Play Contest, Vault Projects is happy to finally bring Women of the Fur Trade to Winnipeg!

The year is eighteen hundred and something, just before the collapse of the Canadian Fur Trade. The characters are three women, trapped in a house, in a fort, on the banks of the Red River.
