 McNally Robinson Booksellers Events
Live in the Atrium of McNally Robinson Booksellers, Grant Park

May 1, 7 pm - 8 pm

Join us for a special evening celebrating Road to Justice by Art Miki, illustrated by Geoff Miki. Featuring a conversation hosted by Fortunato Lim, followed by a book signing. This event sponsored by the Asian Heritage Society of Manitoba in celebration of Asian Heritage Month.
Available as a YouTube stream: https://www.youtube.com/live/XsNWqnicTsI

Art Miki was five years old in May 1942, when the Canadian government forced him and his family to leave their home in British Columbia because they were Japanese. As part of a special law that gave the government extra power during wartime, thousands of Japanese people in Canada were interned during the Second World War, which meant they lost their homes.
Art worked with other Japanese Canadians to make the government answer for the injustice of internment. After a lot of hard work and collaboration, they finally achieved redress for the wrongs that had been done to them. Recognizing that his family’s experience was one of many human rights violations in Canada, Art helped other groups fight for their rights, too.

Art Miki is a community leader, human rights activist and was a teacher, elementary school principal, citizenship judge and author of Gaman – Perseverance: Japanese Canadians’ Journey to Justice. Geoff Miki is an artist with his main focus on drawing, painting and printmaking.

Fortunato Lim is the President of the Asian Heritage Society of Manitoba and has been an educator for over 20 years. He currently serves as the Divisional Principal of Anti-Racism Initiatives for Seven Oaks School Division. Born in the Philippines and of Chinese and Filipino heritage, Fortunato moved to Canada in 1989.

Can Jax get to the bottom of it before the Emperor is sworn in in his magical new suit? Come see the inauguration where the naked truth of tyranny is revealed!

Master winemaker thinks he has created the next great wine that will make him a millionaire, but just when he’s about to unveil it, something sinister happens! Was it a Tinder date gone terribly wrong? Or did those two arguing sports fans find someone else to disagree with? Maybe that Social Media Influencer posted the wrong picture. What about the regular who always has a story? Does he know the answer? Perhaps we’ll just have to leave it up to the junior criminologist, who only comes here to study, to figure out who did it and why.

SOOKRAM’S DOUBLE FEATURE NIGHT
1 Ticket. 2 Cult Classics. 1 16 oz Specialty Sookram’s Draft. All for $15.

“Life’s a show, and some of us were born to steal it.”
Step into the glam-splattered dreamscape of Phantom of the Paradise and Labyrinth. Two operatic fever dreams of music, obsession, and glittering rebellion. These aren’t just movies. They’re rock operas, glam fairy tales, and cinematic hallucinations where the music isn’t just part of the story; it is the story.
First up, Phantom of the Paradise... Winnipeg’s favourite cult movie. No other city has embraced De Palma’s neon-drenched rock opera quite like ours.
Then fall headfirst into Jim Henson’s Labyrinth, where David Bowie’s Jareth lures you with riddles, rhythm, and a voice that could bend time. It’s a journey through love, illusion, and the beat of a magic drum.
Whether you're here to chant “Life at Last” or sway to “As the World Falls Down,” this double feature is your escape into mirrors, into myth, into the heart of the music.
This is not just a night at the movies.
Dress loud. Sing proud. And don’t be late.

Ensuring the Magic of Outdoor Theatre Lives On

This past year’s climate instability has had a tangible impact. We faced 14 performances that were either modified or cancelled entirely due to conditions like wildfires, air quality issues, flash storms, and smoke. We had cast members struggling with vocal strain from the smoke.

By supporting us now, you’re helping protect the wonder of theatre in nature. We can’t do it without you.
Your generous support will go directly into tangible actions that will keep SIR thriving.
Here are just a few of the areas where your donations will make a real difference:
Enhancing Audience Care and Accessibility: We need to ensure everyone has a comfortable experience. That means adding more porta-potties to reduce wait times, and make it easier for everyone to enjoy the show.

Upgrading Our Infrastructure: We’re transitioning to a new digital system that will revolutionize how we communicate with you, streamline ticketing, and improve our overall audience engagement.

Expanding New Play Development: We’re proud of the new works that have emerged from SIR, like Dark Lady, The Player King and Pandora, which started right here in Winnipeg and have since been performed across provinces. We want to continue nurturing Manitoba talent, developing new plays, and sharing our unique voice with even wider audiences. New plays require deep care: workshops, many re-writes, try-out readings, time and resources!

Please consider donating today so that SIR can continue to thrive, rain or shine. With your help, we’ll keep the wonder alive.

With heartfelt gratitude,
Rodrigo Beilfuss, artistic director, Shakespeare in the Ruins

The Life and work of David Wynyard Bellhouse
Trained as an architect in Bruges, Belgium and London, England, David Wynyard Bellhouse (1861 – 1952) immigrated to Manitoba in 1883 where he initially farmed near Cypress River. He moved to Winnipeg in 1896 where he worked in a few jobs until he was able to set up his practice as an architect.
I will describe his building background in England and his own work in the building industry in Manitoba, illustrated with several examples that are mostly standing today. In Winnipeg, Bellhouse designed factories and warehouses in and near the Exchange District, apartment buildings, churches, and houses, mainly for Winnipeg’s wealthy living in Armstrong’s Point and Crescentwood.
Speaker: David R. Bellhouse is the author of three academic books on the history of probability and statistics and of five self-published books on the history of his family.

Moving Matter: Tyndall stone in the city tour
Join us for a walking tour exploring several of downtown Winnipeg's Tyndall stone buildings. Quarries near Garson, Manitoba have been the only source for the stone as building material for the last 120 years. Learn about Tyndall stone's geology, how to spot and identify fossils, and about the stone's use and relationship to people in the region over the last 3000 years. It’s springtime in rural Manitoba. The snow has finally left the exotic animal farm where an ostrich finds and swallows a shiny object. Cue veterinarian and amateur sleuth Dr. Peter Bannerman, who surgically removes the object, which looks like an ancient Viking artifact. Soon after, people are horrified by a series of animal mutilations. This sets Peter, and his talented sniffer dog, Pippin, on the hunt for answers.
