Jazz Winnipeg Presents:
Elizabeth Shepherd
w/ Zachary Rushing

After 3 years of interviewing strangers who all shared being Montrealers, Elizabeth found herself with countless stories that make up a "people's history" of the city she loves so much, which she then wove into 11 original songs.
The four-time JUNO nominee and two-time Polaris-Prize nominee has been featured on BBC, J-Wave (Japan), WBGO (New York), NPR and Deutschland Radio.

A transplant to Winnipeg via Seattle, Washington, Zachary Rushing brings a seasoned sound rich in varied influences and styles. He has performed musical theatre, contemporary pop, classical and more, though he is most at home with the jazz tradition.

The Paper Kites will be back in town with Wild Rivers!
Our hotel window in New York City looked straight into the apartment building across the street. You could see all these windows lighting up and people getting home from their nights out. We just sat there and watched them. It was fascinating. It was living art.
It's a collection of stories about these characters all living in an apartment building; I wanted to capture moments, feelings, it's about people and their stories.

We will be presenting a handful of unique and exciting shows!
This award-wining adaptation of King Ubu has garnered much praise. Since its creation, Ubu has been performed over 850 times in Québec, Mexico, Brazil and Europe!

Two armies of French baguettes face each other in a stand-off as tomato bombs explode, an egg beater hovers over fleeing troops and molasses-blood splatters on fork-soldiers as they charge Père Ubu. Anything goes as Poland's fate is sealed on a tabletop! Film references spice things up as two performers hammer-out a small-scale fresco of grandiose buffoonery.

Nov. 8 - 20
Fleet Gallery, 65 Albert Street, Winnipeg

In ‘Play to Audience: a social media addiction’ I take a critical view of social media culture and its implications to our humanity.

Seventeen small paintings on paper, 9” x 12”, of people taking selfies are painted quickly and intuitively, where observer becomes the observed and self consciousness is suppressed by the viewer as voyeur.
Seven oil paintings, 28” x 34”, of theatre interiors are painted slowly and in many layers, as a process of fusing organic with inorganic elements.

Loose outlines of human heads suggest at once a conscious, attentive audience, and an unconscious audience, oblivious to being ensnared by social media.

I am interested in the gap between participation and addiction. At the heart of these paintings is our vulnerability of needing to fit in. There is an amoeba-like quality to how we move in and out of consciousness, where we vacillate between free and parasitic.

Divination is the art of seeking knowledge of the future. This art usually involves the use of an object or objects to gain answers to questions, or to see events. The use of interpretive tools can help the Divine/Spirit/Universe relay guidance through your higher-self. Divination takes many forms. We shall be touching on Runes, Tea Leaf Reading, Oracle and Tarot cards, Pendulums, and Crystal Balls.

Full payment is required prior to October 30th to save your spot!

All Hallows Eve is a time that we celebrate the death and rebirth of the world around us while honouring those cycles and rhythms in ourselves. Instructors Ashley and Danielle invite you to celebrate this magical time with them! Take part in meditation, discussion, and, of course, divination! You are welcome to bring an object or photo of a loved one for our ancestors alter that will be set up for the duration of the ceremony.
