The idea of Gus the Wrong-Way Goose was inspired by Coral's youngest son Sean, his struggle with Dyslexia and his ability to “find his own way”. She conceived the story back in 1994 with the hopes that one day her oldest son, Eric, would illustrate it for her.

Coral Hetherington has had a varied and exciting working career including being a freelance writer/ producer, a Media Specialist for the Manitoba Government, a television instructor at Red River College and an entrepreneur. Presently she is the Accounts Manager at Brematson & Associates, a company that advocates for the disabled.

Eric Hetherington is a graduate of Digital Multimedia Technology from Red River College. He works as a freelance artist, designer and videographer.

Japan has been devastated by a huge earthquake, subsequent aftershocks and a tsunami, and the threats from nuclear power plants along the coast.

The tsunami has washed many poor fishing villages into the ocean. Thousands are dead, injured and homeless. Many have not yet been reached.
The danger isn't over.  There continue to be aftershocks, warnings of further tsunamis and reactors are still at risk.

Jaya Beange lived and taught for two years in Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture, which is about 50 kilometers from a nuclear facility. Jaya, with other former teachers, has started a relief fund that will go directly to Iwaki.

Please keep the people of Iwaki, Fukushima and Japan in your thoughts and prayers.
If you have already helped, thank you so much.

Bolero Dance Theatre: MATADOR

Bolero Dance Theatre brings the art of bullfighting to Winnipeg!

Come to the premiere of MATADOR, an original flamenco ballet at the
Centre Culturel Franco-Manitobain, 340 Provencher.

8:00 pm Saturday, March 26
2:00 pm Sunday, March 27

Tickets are $22 for adults l $18 for students/seniors
Online at Bolero Dance Theatre
or in person at McNally Robinson Booksellers

Against a backdrop of traditional Spanish and flamenco music, the company brings the passion of the bullfight to life. Guest dancer Beny Pupo from Cuba will draw on his classical ballet training to portray the bull, contrasting with the flamenco footwork and deft cape manipulations of Puerto Rican-born Pedro Aurelio as the matador.

The production includes a company of ten dancers and live musical accompaniment featuring flamenco guitar with vocals, and piano.

Based on the novel Blood and Sand by Spanish author Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, they will tell the story of a famous matador torn between his childhood love and an aristocratic seductress. His divided loyalties undermine his prowess in the arena, with tragic results.  The novel has formed the basis for numerous movie versions featuring Rudolph Valentino, Rita Hayworth, and Sharon Stone.

Bolero Dance Theatre was founded in 1997 by Artistic Director Pedro Aurelio. It is the only dance company in Canada which uses the Spanish dance form to tell a dramatic story.

Dylan Miner & Kristin Nelson

Main Gallery: PROVISIONAL
Dylan Miner
March 25 – April 23
Reception: Friday, March 25, from 8:00 to 11:00 pm

With a nod to Louis Riel and the Métis provisional government that he helped establish in 1869-1870, artist Dylan Miner uses ‘provisional’ as the starting point from which to interrogate the transitory nature of politics, knowledge, borders, people, identity, history, sports, masculinity, and gender.

Borrowing from a multiplicity of sources, Miner’s artwork considers momentary lapses that could potentially change at any minute.  “Provisional” looks backward to move forward in a pre-figurative and unending movement into the future.  -- Curator, Jenny Western

Blues in Winnipeg Prior to 1960

'Blues in Winnipeg Prior to 1960', an audio-visual journey, will be led by music historian Owen Clark at Aqua Books, on Thursday, March 24 from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm.  Free!

Drummer Owen Clark was a young man when he performed the blues repertoire at Winnipeg's Chan’s Moon Room Cabaret every night with the Bernie Shaw Trio.

The blues came to Winnipeg with the traveling entertainers in the 1930s and 40s. By the 1940s and 50s, a steady stream of recordings had spread this music all over Canada.

The big bands played the blues every night: Olie Wagner and his Knights of Harlem; The Len Pattenden Band at the Roseland Dance Gardens; Bill Moore and the Aristocrats of Syncopation at the Tarantella Dance Gardens.
Vocalists Del Wagner, Wilf Harper and Ray St. Germain were singinging the blues. As were the vocal groups of the 1950s: The Swingtones, the Saints, The Shadows, and The Len Cariou Trio.

Bernadette Wagner's work has appeared in journals, anthologies, and magazines and on radio, television and film, in schools, on stages, in the streets and on the web.  This hot place, a collection of poetry, explores the personal as political and the political as personal.  It received a Saskatchewan Book Award nomination.

Chandra Mayor's writing has appeared in several anthologies, including Interruptions: 30 Women Tell the Truth about Motherhood; Breathing Fire 2: Canada's New Poets, and Post-Prairie.  Her first book, August Witch: poems, won the Eileen McTavish Sykes Award for Best First Book.
She received the 2004 John Hirsch Award for Most Promising Writer, and her novel, Cherry, won the Carol Shields Winnipeg Book Award. Her story, All the Pretty Girls, won the Lambda Literary Award for Best Lesbian Fiction and was shortlisted for a 2008 CBC Literary Award.

In a collaboration that has spanned well over a decade, Winnipeg multi-disciplinary artists Shawna Dempsey and Lorri Millan have created a body of internationally acclaimed work that addresses feminist, lesbian, and social concerns with biting wit.
