Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra

"Bass-ically New York" with Rufus Reid and George Colligan
Sunday, March 20, at 2:00 / 7:30
Winnipeg Art Gallery
Tickets $29.50 / $15

If there is one instrument on the bandstand that is hard to ignore in any context it is the bass.  Tall, bulbous and ungainly in its acoustic guise, or sleek, shiny and menacing when played electric, we hear its low rumblings and fat plunking throughout the performance as it locks down the rhythm along with the drums.

Rufus Reid has been the bass player of choice for Gene Ammons, Kenny Dorham, Sonny Stitt, Dexter Gordon, Bill Evans, Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie and countless other jazz masters.  Reid is a winner of the 2000 Charlie Parker Composer Award Commission.  His five records as a leader – with a sixth due out this April – have all received critical acclaim.
Former New York native, now University of Manitoba Jazz educator, Colligan fills out the rhythm section for this exciting must-see concert.

For this concert the WJO will be playing many of Rufus Reid’s compositions and arrangements at this show along with tunes by George Colligan and the WJO’s own Richard Gillis.
