Lanterns for Peace 2017
Hosted by Peace Alliance Winnipeg

Peace Alliance Winnipeg, the Japanese Cultural Association of Manitoba, and Council of Canadians-Winnipeg Chapter commemorate the 1945 atomic bombings of Hiroshima (Aug. 6) and Nagasaki (Aug. 9) with a Lantern Ceremony.
We believe it is important to keep the memory of those horrible events alive so that current generations understand we must never allow nuclear weapons to be used again.

The ceremony is something the whole family can enjoy. Using art supplies provided by the organizers, you make lanterns and float them in the fountain. These videos will give you a good idea of what to expect:

We hope you can join us this year.

Annual General Meeting - PAL Winnipeg, the Performing Arts Lodge of Winnipeg

Winnipeggers love their reputation as a centre for artistic expression and excellence. There is a large creative community that feeds this dynamism: actors, technicians, dancers, writers, musicians, and filmmakers. Yet, the vast majority of those artists won’t have the means by which to afford housing as they age.

PAL Winnipeg is a not for profit, registered charitable organization dedicated to providing affordable housing and support services for older members in the performing and allied professions. PAL considers these cultural pioneers a priority for PAL residency since the erratic employment and overall low income endemic within the performing arts industry has prevented many from establishing sufficient retirement funds. PAL Winnipeg is working to provide senior members of the performing arts community with a safe and secure home in an affordable and supportive environment.

Architecture+Film series - Citizen Jane: Battle for the City
Director: Matt Tyrnauer
2016, USA, 92 min

The story about our global urban future, in which nearly three-fourths of the world’s population will live in cities by the end of this century. It’s also a story about America’s recent urban past, in which bureaucratic, “top down” approaches to building cities have dramatically clashed with grassroots, “bottom up” approaches. The film brings us back mid-century, on the eve of the battles for the heart and soul of American cities, about to be routed by cataclysmically destructive Urban Renewal and highway projects.

The film details the revolutionary thinking of Jane Jacobs, and the origins of her magisterial 1961 treatise The Death and Life of Great American Cities, in which she single-handedly undercuts her era’s orthodox model of city planning, exemplified by the massive Urban Renewal projects of New York’s “Master Builder” Robert Moses.
Citizen Jane offers a playbook, courtesy of Jane Jacobs, for organizing communities and speaking the truth to entrenched and seemingly insurmountable powers.

Access to the roof requires climbing a flight of stairs. There is a lift to the lobby.
Join us for an architectural tour of Artspace, the Gault Building, including a visit to the roof for a wonderful view of the Exchange District.

The Gault Building is a good example of a Richardsonian Romanesque-style warehouse at a key intersection in Winnipeg's Exchange District, a national historic site. The substantial masonry structure, designed by George Browne to accommodate the western expansion of Montreal dry goods wholesaler A.F. Gault and Co., was among the first large warehouses built in response to Winnipeg's rise as a regional distribution centre.

The landmark, which, with the annex, fills nearly half a city block, physically anchors three important streetscapes and functionally retains a prominent role as an arts centre containing studios, galleries, offices and a theatre.
