Moonlight Express Vaudeville Revue by Tim Osmond, banjo picker
The Crescent Arts Centre Vaudeville Camp has created another original vaudeville production called "The Moonlight Express" and centres around the history of the train that used to take Winnipeggers to Winnipeg Beach where they could ride the world's biggest wooden roller coaster, the carousel and other rides along the boardwalk.
The parents would inevitably end up in the huge Dance Hall that featured all the finest dance music from the jazz age with the finest Winnipeg musicians.
The ride to and from the beach was an adventure in itself and it is rumoured that all sorts of shenanigans happened on the train - especially on the return trip - which is at night - in the dark - after a night of wild dancing.

I've done comedy, singing & dancing so it was only a matter of time before I tried vaudeville! I love performing. This show gives me a chance to do a bit of each. Well, I've got to go... I hear the Moonlight Express blowing its horn & I don't want to miss my train, after a long work week! I hope that there will be some romance in the air this weekend.
I paid my fare, I don't care if I'm ever comin' back! Toodle-oo & see you soon!
~ Renee Billauer

Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art, 460 Portage Ave, Winnipeg, MB R3C 0E8

Plug In ICA is delighted to announce an upcoming performance and book launch. Please join us in our bookstore for a performance by Chipo Chipaziwa. Following the performance we will be celebrating the prairie launch of Chipaziwa’s first artist book.
In 'My Mother My Home', Chipaziwa explores utilizing written language and alternative representational forms of art to document her previous performances.
Chipaziwa sets out to use the book format as a means of archiving her performances with/in the absence of her physical body. An experiment in memory, which weaves her past and present relations — that is, as an example of Black ancestrally and Black futurity — in the form of collaboration, in which she is the connecting element.
In 'Slipping Into Slipping Away', Chipaziwa continues her investigation by delving into the intersections of memory, legibility, archives, liminal encounters, and psychoanalysis.

Chipo Chipaziwa is a performance artist whose practice investigates the power dynamic between performer and audience. Chipaziwa currently resides on the unceded territories of the xwməθkwəy̓ əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) and səl̓ílwətaʔɬ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples.

- March 26 - 'Peace Should Not Be This Fragile' - with special guests Dr. Denis Mukwege, the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean (former Governor General of Canada), Peter Frantz (Panzi Foundation USA) and Darcy Ataman

*
Winnipeg music and film producer Darcy Ataman organized the fundraiser. Last year, he travelled to the African country to implement a music program that helps the victims heal.

[One woman] told me that every day she got up and made a choice, in that, do I go up and work in the mine and I know I’m going to get raped, or do I not make enough money to feed my kids for that day?

One thing that struck Ataman about the community was the number of children there.
It dawned on me that these are the kids born in the rape. These are the kids that have not seen the outside world yet.

Now, Ataman is trying to raise money to continue the Make Music Matter program, which encourages women to work through trauma and share their stories through music.
It’s incredible what music does in their lives.  It literally gives them a reason to get up in the morning again.

A 2011 report by the American Journal of Public Health estimated that upwards
of 1.8 million women in Congo have been raped during their lifetimes.

Dr. Denis Mukwege’s Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, Congo has treated thousands of victims of sexual violence since 1999, creating a gated community where women and families can feel safe from the social stigma surrounding rape.  The international community has awarded Dr.Mukwege numerous accolades for his work, as well as multiple nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize.
