The Winnipeg Premiere of Gruber's Frankenstein!!, a pan-demonium for chansonnier and 13-person orchestra, with children's rhymes by HC Artmann.

Frankenstein!! has proved very popular in the 20 years since Gruber wrote it. The music touches all those areas of culture to which the texts refer. So pop music and hints of folk-song, Kurt Weill and Hanns Eisler are all thrown into the mix to fuse with Stravinskian neo-classicism and the long tradition of Viennese cabaret. The humour is black but quizzically genial, and Gruber's own performance is gleefully exuberant.
Todd Martin is the leader of the Dirty Catfish Brass Band, and performs regularly with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and Ron Paley Big Band.

Lanikai mix the serene and the stormy, pulling together lush, sparkling alt-pop vibes and swaggering ‘60s soul groove to create a timeless, distinctive sound. Instead of breaking under current trends, they bend with them. Their first, self-titled offering distills this approach to its finest form: gorgeous, poignant pop music.

Lanikai's personnel features producer Thomas D'Arcy (The Carnations, Small Sins) who also sings on “Stay a Little Longer”. Gregory Macdonald (Sloan) on keys. Shamus Currie (The Sheepdogs) on trombone, and a score of other players including Liam O'Neil (saxophone), Tim Iskierski (drums), Drew Jurecka (strings), and Tom Moffett (trumpet). Lanikai is the crystal clear sound of Marti Sarbit's purest voice.

We will have great prizes for our raffle. There will be a costume contest with bonus points for coming in theme with the event. We will have Monty Python films running in the background and a live DJ spinning tunes to dance the night away.

The hall is an amazing 2 level split with huge stage and dance floor. Guests can stay on the main level to dance or head on upstairs where they will find a second bar area and a slightly quieter atmosphere where you can play board games.

Happy Ninth Anniversary to Us!! by Margaret Ullrich

Happy Ninth Birthday to Winnipeg is Better Than Chocolate!!
I want to thank each of you for visiting, whether you've visited on a daily, weekly or occasional basis during the past nine years!

Doing this blog has been a reminder of how our world is becoming so much smaller, thanks to the internet. I'm always amazed when I learn where you live.

When I started this blog in 2009, Canada was always the number one country for visitors. Well, that changed three years ago.
People from the United States are still the top visitors. Maybe it's due to our dollar's value.
I hope it’s meant that our neighbours are curious about what we have here in Winnipeg, and that they have been inspired to come for a vacation, or at least to see a show or two.

There’s also been a big increase in visitors from Germany and Russia.
Tourists can sure get a great bang for their vacation buck in Canada.
Hope they are coming to Winnipeg and enjoying a lot of great events here.

More people from the Philippines have been visiting, with the result that the Philippines is now one of the top ten countries, bumping Slovenia off the list.
I’m not surprised - Winnipeg has a large, vibrant Philippine community.
Maybe people have decided to see a few events while visiting family and friends.

The top ten countries and their visitors are:
United States……….. 115,014
Canada……………………. 87,682
Germany……..…………. 60,773
Russia…………..………… 37,447
Ukraine.…………..…….. 14,439
France……………….……. 12,952
Philippines…………….….  5,579
United Kingdom….……. 4,199
China………………….…….. 3,232
Japan..………….….….…… 2,577

During the years there have also been visitors from Moldova, Turkey, Ireland, Australia,
Singapore, Taiwan, Argentina, Denmark, Sweden, Eritrea, Italy, Finland, the Netherlands,
Spain, Macedonia (FYROM), Mexico, Afghanistan, Thailand, Slovakia, India, Bangladesh,
Israel, Malaysia, Kuwait, Greece, Kenya, Vietnam, Czech Republic, Portugal, Bulgaria,
Romania, United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, Armenia, Belarus, Namibia, Honduras,
Slovenia, Lithuania, Indonesia and Czechia - just to name the other visitors.

I'm so glad each of you stopped by for a look.
Thank you for taking an interest in events happening here in Winnipeg!

Since I don’t post on a daily basis, why not become a subscriber?
It’s easy and FREE - just click on the ‘FOLLOW’ link under the pictures of followers and post your email address. After joining you will get an email every time there is a new post.
This way you won’t ever miss a post or an event.

I don’t post on Facebook anymore, but I do post a link on Twitter whenever there is a new post. Just click on the Twitter link '@ImTurning60' on the side bar above the followers and we’ll be able to keep in touch that way.
You can also follow by email. You'll receive an email when I post.
Gotta love modern technology!

It’s been interesting learning what types of events you want to know about.
I do pay attention to which posts get the most visits.
It seems music posts - especially those with links to websites - interest most people.
I hope you’re enjoying hearing the music from our up-and-coming musicians!
I’ll be posting more of those, and similar, events.

Please take a moment and comment when an event or personality interests you.
Local artists do check when they’re in the media and they love the feedback.

I'll also be cutting down on the events that you're not interested in seeing.
Book launches don’t seem to be popular.
Understandable - most of these books are not available where you live.
So I’ve stopped posting about book launches.
Who has time to waste, right?

As I said when Sophie and I signed off our weekly show...
Have a great weekend. How can you miss - you're in Winnipeg!
