Please Help D'Arcy's A.R.C.

D’Arcy’s A.R.C. (Animal Rescue Centre) was notified that it did not receive funding from the Aviva Community fund.

D’Arcy Johnston, President of D’Arcy’s A.R.C, indicated that he appreciates the community support that the shelter received during the voting process, allowing the shelter to move into the position of finalist.

"As usual, Manitobans demonstrated their generosity in supporting this important cause."

Despite the loss, the local animal shelter remains committed to its goal of rescuing abandoned and strayed animals.

If individuals or organizations are interested in donating to the shelter, they can either call  888-2266 or go the D’Arcy’s A.R.C’s website.

D’Arcy’s A.R.C. is a registered charity and is able to provide a tax receipt for any contribution-in-kind valued over $10. The shelter does not receive government funding.

D’Arcy’s A.R.C., a Winnipeg-based shelter, has been open since November, 2001. The shelter is dedicated to rescuing cats and dogs from situations of abandonment, homelessness, neglect and abuse. The animals at the shelter are given the veterinary care they need and a safe, caring and comfortable place to live until they are adopted.

D'Arcy's Arc Needs Your Help

D'Arcy's Arc, a Winnipeg no-kill animal shelter, is going broke.

Please click here for their website.  From the site you can click on the "Canada Helps" button to make donations directly to the shelter.

Pet adoptions at D'Arcy's Arc are down 40 per cent from the previous year, leaving owner D'arcy Johnston struggling to pay the bills.  He hasn't been able to cover his hydro bill in two months and just got a disconnect notice.  He also owes vet bills amounting to about $10,000.

"Whether [hydro] will shut us down the middle of January, I haven't talked to them yet. I'm trying to find the $2,200 to pay them," Johnston said.

Johnston believes adoptions have dropped because more people are going online to find their pets.  As well, the city isn't doing enough to enforce its spay and neuter bylaws for cats, he said.  Doing so would help reduce an exploding cat population and ease the pressure on shelters like his.

"I'm at the point where we're going to tell everybody to drop their animals off at 510 Main Street, City Hall," Johnston said.

Johnston will decide in the next few weeks if he has to start turning away any new animals.
