Stories will focus on extraordinary women or ordinary women who have done incredible things! A diverse line-up of monologues by Canadian playwrights, performed by a talented cast. It gives voice to women of all backgrounds and covers topics from the hilarious to the inspiring.  Some of the monologues do contain strong language.

At the Gate by Sandra Drag

A mother attempts to make sense of her autistic son through this heart-wrenching story.

Zelda with a Z, by Frances Koncan
Performed by Kim Kakegamic
The audience becomes the audience of a talk show! Zelda is an exuberant and flustered host as she talks to us about her life with writer F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Glory Bound by Scott Douglas
Performed by Samantha Walters
A comic book come to life! Glory Girl attempts to escape her captors, but is she really bound against her will?

Loretta by Step Taylor

Loretta lies to her drug addict son about losing her job so that he can focus on passing his exams and graduating, but the jig is up.

An Inheritance by Jennica Grienke
Performed by Liz Whitbread
A girl struggling with the death of her mother and a new understanding of her father. A young woman angry with God, and faced with a horrifying decision. Meet Ida, reliving her trauma in the hopes of healing before it’s too late.

John Fubbister (also known as Isobel Gun) by Sandy Klowak
Performed by Mallory James
They said that the gruelling work of a fur trader in the wilds of Rupert’s Land would break a European woman like a twig. Not if Isobel Gunn has anything to say about it.

Mutated by Carly Pokoradi
Performed by Jenna Jenna Leanne Hill
Travel the world! Go on adventures! Bea’s exciting life plans are put on hold when she’s faced with a life-altering situation.

Urban Nun by Dave Carley

Connecting Canada

One World Connected is the theme that the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) chose for this year’s World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD).

Being connected with oneself, with others, and a community is critical to one’s well being.  Building connections is one of the pillars of suicide prevention, intervention and postvention.

On September 10 Canadians will gather to show their support for suicide prevention, to remember and celebrate the lives those who have died, comfort those who grieve and strengthen our connection with each other.  During WSPD we will remember that we are all connected to each other.

We invite everyone to find a way of connecting to WSPD to shine a light on this important issue, sending a message to those who are despairing, connection to those who are grieving and reminding us all that there is help, hope and people who care.

On September 10 CASP and Klinic will launch a website to help workplaces support suicide prevention; a resource to help people who might receive a call from someone who in distress.

This is also the theme for this year’s virtual suicide prevention conference, November 19 - 21, 2014.  To learn more about the virtual suicide prevention conference.

Join Manitoba Council for International Cooperation (MCIC) as we enjoy speakers, music, ethical chocolate and making a difference!

Trade Manitoba is facilitating Winnipeg’s first ever Fair Trade Carrotmob, a combination of positive reinforcement with the energy of the mob genre. It encourages a business that is already making good and ethical choices by giving it a group shopping spree. That business, in return, will sign a pledge making a commitment to further ethical improvements to their store.

There have been over 200 Carrotmobs in over 20 countries and all of them are bringing pressing social issues to light. The visibility of fair trade fits into the Carrotmob model as they are both about voting with your money. Every time a consumer makes the decision to spend their dollars toward an ethical and sustainable business or product, they have voted with their support.

In addition to commissioning new works, The Phoenix Collective works closely with leading composer to re-envision and re-purpose the great repertoire of the past in a contemporary aesthetic.

You’ll hear re-imaginings of Schubert and Barber by Michael Oesterle, and of Machaut by Michael Matthews, alongside works by Stravinsky and Vincent Ho.
Manitoba-born Hugh Russell will lead us along Barber’s Dover Beach and through songs by Schubert.  Witness the arrival of an ensemble you’ll want to hear again and again!
