SondheimFest, January 16 - February 3
"Art, in itself, is an attempt to bring order out of chaos." -‐ Stephen Sondheim
No one has successfully bent or broken more of Broadway’s rules than Stephen Sondheim. The lyricist/composer challenged the “safe” American musical of his mentor, Oscar Hammerstein, and brought musical theatre into the modern world: gang fights in the streets (West Side Story, 1957), a bittersweet look at marriage (Company, 1970) and a chorus line of killers (Assassins, 1990).
“Sondheim has changed the course of theatre history, tearing the musical away from its roots in romantic comedy,” says MTC Artistic Director Steven Schipper. “This year’s festival will celebrate his artistic impact on our city and the world."
Two additional events – from zone41 theatre and Tara Players/Murder on the Menu,
along with screenings at the Winnipeg Public Library and a free lecture series.
