The Complete Book of North American Owls
featuring a special appearance from Nemo, a live owl

From the silent, lethal swoop of a great horned owl as it swerves between northern pines to make a kill, to the pert bobbing of a pygmy owl as it focuses on an intruder, the habits of each species are vividly described. Owls celebrates these dramatic and stealthy nocturnal hunters and showcases twenty owl species in extensive detail, with six pages of stunning full-color images.

Dr. James Duncan is the Director of the Wildlife Branch of Manitoba Conservation and has researched owl for over 26 years. James with his wife and fellow zoologist, Patsy, have banded over 2,000 owls in Manitoba.

River of Stars

From the bestselling author of Under Heaven comes an epic of prideful emperors, battling courtiers, nomadic invasions, and of a woman fighting to find her place in the world. In an empire divided by bitter factions circling an exquisitely cultured emperor who loves his gardens and his art far more than the burdens of governing, dramatic events on the northern steppe alter the balance of power.

Guy Gavriel Kay has been awarded the International Goliardos Prize for his work in the literature of the fantastic, is a two-time winner of the Aurora Award, and won the 2008 World Fantasy Award for Ysabel. Under Heaven was the recipient of the 2011 Sunburst Award for Excellence in Canadian Literature of the Fantastic.

April 10 Doors 7:15 pm | Show 8:00 pm
Tickets: $12 advance | $17 door
Montreal folk-loop specialists Twin Voices open the show.

Ingrid Gatin and Twin Voice create indie-folk magic on-stage.

Open City Cinema presents:
Barry Doupé’s The Colors that Combine to Make White are Important
April 9 l Doors at 7
Video Pool, 100 Arthur Street, 3rd Floor
$5.00

Vancouver animator Barry Doupé explores the power structure within a failing Japanese glass factory. Two parallel storylines — one involving the investigation of a suspect employee, the other a stolen painting — converge in an exposition on gender and desire. Doupé’s computer-animated characters evolve through three distinct acts, looking for something to be found through a crisis of feeling.

Alluding to the office comedy 9 to 5 (1980), Yasujiro Ozu’s staid, heartwarming Good Morning (1959), and Luchino Visconti’s sexually-charged finale in Death in Venice (1971), Colors shifts between cultural reference points.

Preceeded by a selection of short films picked by Barry Doupé, featuring the work of:
Marina Roy
Sharon Kahanoff
Tamara Henderson
Aleesa Cohene

Barry Doupé's films have been screened at various venues, including the Ann Arbor Film Festival, International Film Festival Rotterdam, Pleasure Dome and MOCCA (Toronto), Whitechapel Gallery and the Tate Modern (London).

Registration Deadline: Friday, April 5, 2013, 4 pm

Backstrap weaving is portable and inexpensive—ideal for those who lack space and financial means for a table or floor loom, or would like to be able to take their weaving on the road. The results are stunning.

In 1995, Seng, her husband and four children were driven from their home into Thailand. They spent the next 11 years living among 15,000 fellow refugees, sleeping on the ground. Seng supported her family selling clothing and blankets woven on her handmade backstrap loom to foreign visitors.
We were the first family to come to Canada for our resettlement. I wondered how can I earn? So I decided to bring my loom with me.

Prairie Theatre Exchange: Gunmetal Blues

Book by Scott Wentworth
Music & Lyrics by Craig Bohmler and Marion Adler
April 4 - 21
Preview - April 03, 2013

She had hair the colour of moonlight on topaz. And a mouth that would have sent Shakespeare thumbing through a thesaurus.

Gunmetal Blues is a hard-boiled detective yarn disguised as a lounge act...
or maybe it's the other way around.
Live from the Red Eye Lounge, Buddy Toupee - piano player and tour guide - leads us on a voyage of mystery, murder and music as Sam Galahad searches for a missing blonde in a world of smoke and mirrors, shadows and shattered dreams.

The murdered mogul, the missing heiress, the woman with a past, the crooked cop, the world-weary private eye – they’re all here and set to music that will have you humming along as you try to solve the mystery before the final bars end.

I love noir films - always have done.  This was a fun way to add a little 1940’s sensibility to our 40th Anniversary season. - Artistic Director Robert Metcalfe

Petition To End Flogging of Rape Victims

A 15-year-old rape survivor has been sentenced to be whipped 100 times in public!
Let's put an end to this lunacy by hitting the Maldives government where it hurts:
the tourism industry.

The girl's stepfather is accused of raping her for years and murdering the baby she bore.
Now the court says she must be flogged for “sex outside marriage” with a man who has not even been named!

President Mohammed Waheed Hassan of the Maldives is feeling global pressure on this.
We can force him to save this girl and change the law to spare victims this cruel fate.
End the War on Women – by standing up every time an outrage like this happens.

Tourism is the big earner for the Maldives elite, including government ministers.
Let's build a million-strong petition to President Waheed, then threaten the islands' reputation through hard-hitting ads in travel magazines and online until he steps in to save her and abolish this outrageous law.
