Sick + Twisted Theatre, Winnipeg’s own disability theatre company, is thrilled to present our 3rd Annual Holiday Panto!: “Jax, The Beanstalk, and The Emperor’s New Clothes”, an outrageous, joyful celebration of inclusion, laughter, and the spirit of the season.

Jax and their mother are hungry: the crops don't have enough water to grow, and the cow has stopped giving milk. Could this have something to do with the new President Emperor Elect in Skyworld who wants to annex the Lowlands for their fresh water and natural resources? Can Jax get to the bottom of it before the Emperor is sworn in in his magical new suit? Come see the inauguration where the naked truth of tyranny is revealed!

Playwrights: Fiona Smith & Andrea von Wichert

          Carlyn Graff-Czehryn, Emily Jane King
Directed by: Debbie Patterson

Master winemaker thinks he has created the next great wine that will make him a millionaire, but just when he’s about to unveil it, something sinister happens! Was it a Tinder date gone terribly wrong? Or did those two arguing sports fans find someone else to disagree with? Maybe that Social Media Influencer posted the wrong picture. What about the regular who always has a story? Does he know the answer? Perhaps we’ll just have to leave it up to the junior criminologist, who only comes here to study, to figure out who did it and why.

“Life’s a show, and some of us were born to steal it.”
Step into the glam-splattered dreamscape of Phantom of the Paradise and Labyrinth. Two operatic fever dreams of music, obsession, and glittering rebellion. These aren’t just movies. They’re rock operas, glam fairy tales, and cinematic hallucinations where the music isn’t just part of the story; it is the story.
First up, Phantom of the Paradise... Winnipeg’s favourite cult movie. No other city has embraced De Palma’s neon-drenched rock opera quite like ours.
Then fall headfirst into Jim Henson’s Labyrinth, where David Bowie’s Jareth lures you with riddles, rhythm, and a voice that could bend time. It’s a journey through love, illusion, and the beat of a magic drum.
Whether you're here to chant “Life at Last” or sway to “As the World Falls Down,” this double feature is your escape into mirrors, into myth, into the heart of the music.
This is not just a night at the movies.
Dress loud. Sing proud. And don’t be late.

Ensuring the Magic of Outdoor Theatre Lives On

This past year’s climate instability has had a tangible impact. We faced 14 performances that were either modified or cancelled entirely due to conditions like wildfires, air quality issues, flash storms, and smoke. We had cast members struggling with vocal strain from the smoke.

By supporting us now, you’re helping protect the wonder of theatre in nature. We can’t do it without you.
Your generous support will go directly into tangible actions that will keep SIR thriving.
Here are just a few of the areas where your donations will make a real difference:
Enhancing Audience Care and Accessibility: We need to ensure everyone has a comfortable experience. That means adding more porta-potties to reduce wait times, and make it easier for everyone to enjoy the show.

Upgrading Our Infrastructure: We’re transitioning to a new digital system that will revolutionize how we communicate with you, streamline ticketing, and improve our overall audience engagement.

Expanding New Play Development: We’re proud of the new works that have emerged from SIR, like Dark Lady, The Player King and Pandora, which started right here in Winnipeg and have since been performed across provinces. We want to continue nurturing Manitoba talent, developing new plays, and sharing our unique voice with even wider audiences. New plays require deep care: workshops, many re-writes, try-out readings, time and resources!

Please consider donating today so that SIR can continue to thrive, rain or shine. With your help, we’ll keep the wonder alive.

With heartfelt gratitude,
Rodrigo Beilfuss, artistic director, Shakespeare in the Ruins

Written in 1991, Daniel MacIvor’s dark comedy, ‘Never Swim Alone’ is a game of one-upping, memory, nostalgia and petty rivalry that bristles with tension and then explodes.
Two men enter a room. Two boys sit on a beach. They might be the same man, and they might have been the same boy, but it’s important that you know they are not. Two men, mirror images, haunted and bound by the boys they once were, and a single moment during an endless summer. A story about the one who wins, and everyone and everything that gets left behind.
Featuring Jesse Bergen, Ian Mikita, Kerri Woloszyn
Directed by Jane Walker

Invoking the Classical Past in the Gilded Age: The Greek Myth of Penelope and Women’s Craft
In the 1800s, neoclassical themes were popular in art and design. Penelope, the idealized faithful wife of Greek myth, appeared across a variety of media, from painting to upholstery fabric. Building from a discussion of an 1886 tapestry depicting Penelope by Dora Wheeler Keith, this talk examines the use of women’s craft and the invocation of the classical past in supporting colonial enterprise in late 1800s America.
Speaker: Melissa Funke, Dept. of Classics (2025-2026 UW Community Lecture Series)

Caribou Moss Embroidery Workshop, associated with the Galerie Buhler Gallery exhibit “Tending the Wild”
Caribou moss is the inspiration for a free form work that uses colour, layering and only a few stitches to build a fanciful recreation of Cladonia rangiferin. Found in areas of alpine tundra, and in reality a lichen, it grows on the forest floor. You will finish a small piece in the workshop. A frame is included. Skill Level: Beginner and above

Leona Herzog’s art focuses primarily on botanical watercolours and fibres. She has spent hours in the forest with her pencils and watercolours recording plants in situ, pressing samples, and later taking advantage of dried specimens at the WIN Herbarium, U of M, for further study.
Her embroidery was in WIN Herbarium’s exhibition Dry Medium VII: Germinate, at the community gallery in Assiniboine Park Pavilion, and will be in Tending the Wild, curated by hannah_g, at the Buhler Gallery, until November 15. Leona has served on many arts boards and is currently Co-Chair of the Board of Directors for MAWA. Recent curatorial work includes Crafting Wellness – mind + body …at a cost, at C2 Gallery for Manitoba Crafts Museum & Library; and Divergence & Connection at MHC Gallery, a juried exhibition for FLASH photographic festival.

The Life and Work of David Wynyard Bellhouse
Trained as an architect in Bruges, Belgium and London, England, David Wynyard Bellhouse (1861 – 1952) immigrated to Manitoba in 1883 where he initially farmed near Cypress River. He moved to Winnipeg in about 1896 where he was able to set up his practice as an architect.

I will describe his building background in England and his own work in the building industry in Manitoba, illustrated with several examples that are mostly standing today. In Winnipeg, Bellhouse designed factories and warehouses in and near the Exchange District, apartment buildings, churches, and houses, mainly for Winnipeg’s wealthy living in Armstrong’s Point and Crescentwood.

Speaker: Born in Winnipeg, but finding employment in London, Ontario, David R. Bellhouse is a retired academic. He is the author of three academic books on the history of probability and statistics and of five self-published books on the history of his family.
