paskwâwi-mostos: caretakers of the prairie, a collaborative community sculpture
Join Two-Spirit artist and educator, Britt Ross, at Galerie Buhler Gallery for this drop-in workshop. Britt will share bison teachings, while you create beads from clay and prairie seeds to adorn paskwâwi-mostos; a bison sculpture on display outside the gallery. Over the seasons, the beads you create will drop to the ground and plant the beginnings of a prairie!  paskwâwi-mostos is part of the exhibit 'Tending to Wild' to November 15.

To mark the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, Elder Albert McLeod will explain traditional Indigenous concepts of gender, the sacredness of gender diversity, the impact of colonization on gender diversity, and the re-emergence of 2Spirit/Indigenous LGBTQI+ people in the 21st century.

Albert McLeod is a Status Indian with ancestry from Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation and the Metis communities of Cross Lake and Norway House in northern Manitoba. He is one of the directors of the Two-Spirited People of Manitoba. McLeod began his Two-Spirit advocacy in Winnipeg in 1986 and became an HIV/AIDS activist in 1987. He was the director of the Manitoba Aboriginal AIDS Task Force from 1991 to 2001. In 2018 McLeod received an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from the U of W and in 2019, a Champions of Mental Health Award from the Canadian Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health. He is experienced in beadwork, Indigenous regalia-making and leather crafts. McLeod is part of the team designing Thunderhead, the 2SLGBTQI+ National Monument in Ottawa. He is a board member of Winnipeg’s Urban Shaman Gallery: Contemporary Indigenous Art.

Thread Painting Workshop with Shula Mulenga Brown
In this embroidery workshop, you’ll learn to thread-paint a Hoopoe bird on a 6-inch hoop, with all materials and instructions provided. This piece is a tribute to everyday sights and sounds like those of the African Hoopoe or Canadian Blue Jay that offer a sense of belonging, comfort and home.
Shula Mulenga Brown is an African textile artist based in Winnipeg. She creates decorative and functional art through embroidery, sewing and rughooking. Join Cynthia Boehm (Lilax Studio) for a three hour beading lesson where you will learn the two-needle beading technique. Kits will include all materials required to complete a small beaded pin cushion.
Cynthia Boehm, born and raised in Norway House, MB, enjoys carrying on the tradition of her ancestors. The appreciation for the art form was strengthened when Cynthia discovered her great grandmother’s art at the Manitoba Museum. It prompted her to research the historical beadwork and embroidery patterns of her Cree-Métis ancestors.

Invoking the Classical Past in the Gilded Age: The Greek Myth of Penelope and Women’s Craft
In the 1800s, neoclassical themes were popular in art and design. Penelope, the idealized faithful wife of Greek myth, appeared across a variety of media, from painting to upholstery fabric. Building from a discussion of an 1886 tapestry depicting Penelope by Dora Wheeler Keith, this talk examines the use of women’s craft and the invocation of the classical past in supporting colonial enterprise in late 1800s America.

Caribou Moss Embroidery Workshop, associated with the Galerie Buhler Gallery exhibit “Tending the Wild”
Caribou moss is the inspiration for a free form work that uses colour, layering and only a few stitches to build a fanciful recreation of Cladonia rangiferin. Found in areas of alpine tundra, and in reality a lichen, it grows on the forest floor. You will finish a small piece in the workshop. A frame is included. Skill Level: Beginner and above

Leona Herzog’s art focuses primarily on botanical watercolours and fibres. She has spent hours in the forest with her pencils and watercolours recording plants in situ, pressing samples, and later taking advantage of dried specimens at the WIN Herbarium, U of M, for further study.
Her embroidery was in WIN Herbarium’s exhibition Dry Medium VII: Germinate, at the community gallery in Assiniboine Park Pavilion, and will be in Tending the Wild, curated by hannah_g, at the Buhler Gallery, until November 15. Leona has served on many arts boards and is currently Co-Chair of the Board of Directors for MAWA. Recent curatorial work includes Crafting Wellness – mind + body …at a cost, at C2 Gallery for Manitoba Crafts Museum & Library; and Divergence & Connection at MHC Gallery, a juried exhibition for FLASH photographic festival.

George Amabile's thirteenth book and newest collection of poetry is a poetic journey through clarity and distortion, presence and memory, grief and wonder.
George Amabile is a Winnipeg poet and writer. He has published 13 books and has had his work published in over a hundred national and international venues. He has won awards in the CAA National Prize, the CBC Literary Competition, the Petra Kenney International Competition, the MAC national poetry contest, and the National Magazine Awards. His most recent publications are Small Change, Dancing, with Mirrors, Martial Music all of which won Bressani awards, and Operation Stealth Seed which won the Michael Von Rooy award for genre fiction.

Thomas Wharton will launch Wolf, Moon, Dog, a heartfelt novel about the many fabled lives of a dog named Wolf. Featuring a reading and a conversation hosted by Winnipeg Free Press literary editor Ben Sigurdson. This event is dog-friendly.

Follow Wolf as he reincarnates through the ages, from Ancient Egypt to Alexandrian Greece to the Space Race and all the way to a dark future beset by climate change. It is as insightful about human nature as it is about canine behaviour.

Thomas Wharton’s first novel, Icefields, won the 1996 Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Best First Book Canada and the Caribbean and was also a 2008 CBC Canada Reads pick. His next book, Salamander, was shortlisted for the 2001 Governor General’s Literary Award for Fiction and was also a finalist for the Roger’s Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize the same year. His latest novel, The Book of Rain, was a finalist for the 2023 Atwood Gibson Writer’s Trust Fiction Prize and the 2024 Georges Bugnet Award for Fiction.

Join Melanie Dennis Unrau for the launch of her poetry collection Goose, featuring a reading and a conversation hosted by Ariel Gordon.

Goose is a collection of hand-traced visual poems made using found text and images from the 1938 and 1956 editions of Northland Trails, a book of self-illustrated short stories, poems, and essays about the Athabasca region authored by “father of the tar sands” S. C. Ells (1878–1971). Goose takes Ells’s early work as the starting point for an inventive and biting critique of the oil-sands industry and our petromodern energy system.

Melanie Dennis Unrau is a poet, editor, scholar, and climate organizer. She is the author of the literary study The Rough Poets: Reading Oil-Worker Poetry and the poetry collection Happiness Threads: The Unborn Poems. A former editor of The Goose journal and Geez magazine, Melanie also co-edited I’ll Get Right on It: Poems on Working Life in the Climate Crisis.

Winnipegger David Elias is the author of seven books. His historical novel, Elizabeth of Bohemia, is a finalist for The Margaret Lawrence Award for Fiction at The Manitoba Book Awards. His previous works have been up for numerous awards. His writing has appeared in literary magazines and anthologies across the country. He is also a mentor, creative writing instructor, and editor.

In Calgarian Ben Zalkind's debut novel Honeydew, Rose Gold can’t catch a break. Her latest “golden opportunity” has given way to a madcap adventure through the soft underbelly of Bonneville City.

Join us for this chilling mystery that follows a small group of researchers who have arrived at Hill House, a brooding mansion known as a place of evil. Led by a professor, they have come to probe the secrets of the old house, but they soon find that Hill House has terrible plans of its own.
This play was adapted by F. Andrew Leslie from the novel by Shirley Jackson. Featuring a local cast and crew of volunteers and local businesses. This is a community event with a 50/50 raffle for Darcy's Animal Rescue Centre! A portion of ticket sales will be given to Darcy's.

This tour of downtown explores Winnipeg's roots and foundations. Join us to hear stories of the city and learn how Winnipeg became the city it is today.

How and why did humans begin to treat sick and injured animals? And how did those practices evolve from prehistory to the present day? Dr. Schott shares stories of 22 different animal healers and veterinarians from across eras and continents.
Schott lives and practices veterinary medicine in Winnipeg. His first book, The Accidental Veterinarian, was a bestseller and was translated into five languages.

Join Catherine Hunter for the launch of Seeing You Home: Stories. Featuring a reading and a conversation hosted by Margaret Sweatman.

Seeing is a poignant collection of interconnected short stories that navigate love, loss, and the quiet search for meaning in the wake of tragedy. In Winnipeg’s St. Boniface Hospital, Clare watches her husband battle cancer. Paris is a mixed-race (Black, Métis, and Scottish) Instructor II at the U of M, and an assistant editor for Early Theatre. He has a book, entitled Clothed Villainy, forthcoming.
Unrau is a poet, editor, scholar, and climate organizer from Treaty One territory and Métis homeland in Winnipeg. She is the author of The Rough Poets: Reading Oil-Worker Poetry, Happiness Threads: The Unborn Poems, and Goose.

Poverty and Prosperity: A Walk Down Early 1900s Broadway
What was life like for people in Winnipeg 100 years ago? This city was quite different back then and had some major waves in growth. From being the "Gateway to the West" and "Chicago of the North" to the present day, Winnipeg's foundations have been shaped by classism, inequality, and histories both forgotten and overlooked.

This walking tour of downtown explores Winnipeg's roots and foundations, from periods of major growth to the present day. Join us to hear stories of the city and learn how Winnipeg became the city it is today.
Tours will proceed, rain or shine, but may be cancelled at the discretion of the guide in the event of unsafe conditions such as extreme heat or lightning.

This tour departs from the Alloway Arch at the Forks and ends at Dalnavert Museum. You may wish to arrive early to ensure you have time to find parking and use the washroom before the tour departs. This is an outdoor walking tour. Please dress for the weather. You may wish to bring a water bottle.

Some stops may have seating available. The tour can be modified to avoid stairs, but uneven terrain and sidewalks in poor condition may be challenging. Please contact us if you have questions related to the mobility requirements of this tour.

Architect John D. Atchison: Hidden Treasures Walking Tour
Join researcher and writer Gail Perry for a new walking tour of buildings designed by the prolific and accomplished architect John D. Atchison. Born in Illinois and trained in Chicago, Atchison later worked with “the father of the American skyscraper”, William Le Baron Jenney. After working in Chicago for 11 years (including on the 1893 Columbian World Exposition) he moved to Winnipeg in 1905.

In under twenty years John D. Atchison shaped the backdrop of Winnipeg, designing over 160 buildings (60 of them still in use) and advocated for its green and monumental spaces. He was a proponent of the City Beautiful Movement, a member of several civic planning committees and an advocate for the mall approach to the Legislative Building.

The Life and Work of David Wynyard Bellhouse
Trained as an architect in Bruges, Belgium and London, England, David Wynyard Bellhouse (1861 – 1952) immigrated to Manitoba in 1883 where he initially farmed near Cypress River. He moved to Winnipeg in about 1896 where he was able to set up his practice as an architect.

I will describe his building background in England and his own work in the building industry in Manitoba, illustrated with several examples that are mostly standing today. In Winnipeg, Bellhouse designed factories and warehouses in and near the Exchange District, apartment buildings, churches, and houses, mainly for Winnipeg’s wealthy living in Armstrong’s Point and Crescentwood.

Speaker: Born in Winnipeg, but finding employment in London, Ontario, David R. Bellhouse is a retired academic. He is the author of three academic books on the history of probability and statistics and of five self-published books on the history of his family. Among other awards, he has been made an honoured alumnus of the Faculty of Science of the University of Manitoba

Theatre School Summer Camps 2025
At MTYP, our camps are full of opportunities to use your imagination, get into character, create theatre and film, and broaden your horizons.
All of our Summer Camp programming takes place in-person on-site at MTYP.

Classes 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Student drop-off begins at 8:30 am. Pick-up until 4:30 pm.
We can provide supervision until 5:00 p.m. Arrange this additional care at least one week before your camp begins. Campers are asked to bring their own nut-free lunches, snacks, and drinks to get them through the day.
Camp Presentations – Each class will have a camp presentation on the final day.

Financial Assistance is available. No need to pay up front to hold your spot – if you’re applying we’ll place you in a camp right away! If you’re not applying, fees are due upon registration.

It was built by early Winnipeg real estate developer Mark Fortune in 1882. Fortune served on city council from 1879-1881 and helped found the Winnipeg Real Estate Board in 1903. Tragically he lost his life aboard the Titanic in 1912. In 2016 Winnipeg businessman John Pollard purchased the Fortune Block and the next-door Macdonald Block and rehabilitated them for residential and commercial mixed-use.

Join architect Brent Bellamy for a bike tour of his favourite building and places in downtown Winnipeg - old and new, big and small, prominent and little known. Bellamy will tell some of the lost stories and highlight some of the unique places that we often pass by without giving a second thought.
The 90-minute tour will begin at Old Market Square. Participants will bike through the downtown to Assiniboine and loop back to end at Old Market Square.

Participants are required to bring their own bikes. We recommend that everyone wear helmets and bring a water bottle and bike lock.

The Life and work of David Wynyard Bellhouse
Trained as an architect in Bruges, Belgium and London, England, David Wynyard Bellhouse (1861 – 1952) immigrated to Manitoba in 1883 where he initially farmed near Cypress River. He moved to Winnipeg in 1896 where he worked in a few jobs until he was able to set up his practice as an architect.
I will describe his building background in England and his own work in the building industry in Manitoba, illustrated with several examples that are mostly standing today. In Winnipeg, Bellhouse designed factories and warehouses in and near the Exchange District, apartment buildings, churches, and houses, mainly for Winnipeg’s wealthy living in Armstrong’s Point and Crescentwood.
Speaker: David R. Bellhouse is the author of three academic books on the history of probability and statistics and of five self-published books on the history of his family.

Dr. Koop is professor of history and theology at Canadian Mennonite University. He received his PhD from St. Michael’s College in the Toronto School of Theology. He has also taught at Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminaries, served in Brandenberg and Berlin with Mennonite Central Committee, and was a pastor in St. Catharines, Ontario. His publications include Anabaptist-Mennonite Confessions of Faith: The Development of a Tradition, and he is co-editor of Vision: A Journal for Church and Theology.

Make your own beaded, fur-trimmed moccasins with artist Gloria Beckman. The workshop will also include a behind the scenes experience that will allow you to view some of the Manitoba Museum’s collection of moccasins and other footwear, with an artifact showcase and talk by Tashina Houle-Schlup, Head of Indigenous Programming and Engagement.

Gloria has been teaching moccasin and mukluk workshops for schools, in communities, and for the Manitobah Story Boot School. The artists are Mavi Brake, Genevie Henderson and Angela Lillico. Luann Hiebert is the poetry juror. There is a variety of poets, including Angeline Janel Schellenberg and Kelly Nickie. Louella Lester has two poems in the show, each prompted by a different Angela Lillico painting.

Moonlight Express Vaudeville Revue by Tim Osmond, banjo picker
The Crescent Arts Centre Vaudeville Camp has created another original vaudeville production called "The Moonlight Express" and centres around the history of the train that used to take Winnipeggers to Winnipeg Beach where they could ride the world's biggest wooden roller coaster, the carousel and other rides along the boardwalk.
The parents would inevitably end up in the huge Dance Hall that featured all the finest dance music from the jazz age with the finest Winnipeg musicians.
The ride to and from the beach was an adventure in itself and it is rumoured that all sorts of shenanigans happened on the train - especially on the return trip - which is at night - in the dark - after a night of wild dancing.

I've done comedy, singing & dancing so it was only a matter of time before I tried vaudeville! I love performing. This show gives me a chance to do a bit of each. Well, I've got to go... I hear the Moonlight Express blowing its horn & I don't want to miss my train, after a long work week! I hope that there will be some romance in the air this weekend.

Plug In ICA is delighted to announce an upcoming performance and book launch. Please join us in our bookstore for a performance by Chipo Chipaziwa. Following the performance we will be celebrating the prairie launch of Chipaziwa’s first artist book.
In 'My Mother My Home', Chipaziwa explores utilizing written language and alternative representational forms of art to document her previous performances.
Chipaziwa sets out to use the book format as a means of archiving her performances with/in the absence of her physical body. An experiment in memory, which weaves her past and present relations — that is, as an example of Black ancestrally and Black futurity — in the form of collaboration, in which she is the connecting element.
In 'Slipping Into Slipping Away', Chipaziwa continues her investigation by delving into the intersections of memory, legibility, archives, liminal encounters, and psychoanalysis.

Chipo Chipaziwa is a performance artist whose practice investigates the power dynamic between performer and audience. Chipaziwa currently resides on the unceded territories of the xwməθkwəy̓ əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) and səl̓ílwətaʔɬ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples.
