MAY 3, 7 PM – 8 PM

The launch of Anita Daher's new middle grade fantasy grounded in science, Peanut Butter and Chaos: The Mythic Adventures of Samuel Templeton (Yellow Dog), features a reading and a conversation hosted by Colleen Nelson.
Live in the Atrium of McNally Robinson Booksellers, Grant Park. Streamed on YouTube & available for viewing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eeOdBaTIUc

When twelve-year-old Sam is struck by a bolt of lightning, he suddenly sees everything in pixels. His life is further upended by Flum, a non-binary being from a parallel world, a missing neighbour, and astonishing powers that may not last long. Science and magic collide as Sam races to solve a mystery and help Flum return home. But what happens when solving one mystery sparks another?

Anita Daher is an author and actor who has been entrenched in the book publishing industry since 1995 and has sixteen books published. Anita is the former Chair of the Writers’ Union of Canada.

MAY 5, 7 PM – 8 PM

The launch of Sarah Ens's new poetry collection Flyway (Turnstone Press), features a reading and a discussion of the book with host Jennifer Lynn Still.
Live in the Atrium of McNally Robinson Booksellers, Grant Park. Streamed on YouTube & available for viewing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Uhd1mL3zJY

This meditation on the impact of human and ecological trauma explores the cost of survival for three generations of women. Ens follows connections between the Russian Mennonite diaspora and the disrupted migratory patterns of grassland birds. Drawing on family history, Flyway migrates along pathways of geography and the heart to grapple with complexities of home.

Sarah Ens’ debut collection of poetry, The World Is Mostly Sky was shortlisted for the 2021 McNally Robinson Book of the Year Award.

*
MAY 13, 7 PM – 8 PM

The launch of Margaret Sweatman’s new novel The Gunsmith’s Daughter (Goose Lane Editions), features a reading and a conversation hosted by Lara Rae.
Live in the Atrium of McNally Robinson Booksellers, Grant Park. Streamed on YouTube & available for viewing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwzguKKKarM

Sweatman’s novel is both a coming-of-age story and an allegory about Canada-US relations. Set in 1971 during the Vietnam War, Her portrait of a brilliant gunsmith and his eighteen-year-old daughter tells an engrossing story of ruthless ambition, and one young woman’s journey toward independence.

Margaret Sweatman is a playwright and the author of six novels. Her novels have won the Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize, the Carol Shields Winnipeg Book Award, the Margaret Laurence Award for Fiction, the McNally Robinson Book of the Year, and the Sunburst Award for Excellence in Canadian Literature of the Fantastic.

Polar bears eat around 10 kg of food daily, and it costs $10,000 every year to feed each of the nine polar bears at Assiniboine Park Zoo. A single polar bear can weigh as much as 10 adult people. No wonder they have such large appetites! Donate to Care for Bears

Art Exhibition Opening Delights of the Soul: A Raft in the Storm
Artist Talk at 2:00pm.

A delight is something that pleases a person. We savour these moments of undiluted freedom. Each moment, each delight is personal and unique for everyone, but the emotions we feel are the same. They are our rafts in the storm…  Artworks by five Winnipeg artists:
 • Dan Hawksworth is a pop culture, mythology and cosmos inspired mixed media artist who uses abstract styles to look beyond the day to day world.
 • John Izzard is an expressive acrylic and mixed media artist whose art is a spiritual journey representing the world seen and unseen through layering, texture and shading.
 • Jola Liebzeit is an abstract expressionist acrylic and mixed media artist who uses light, texture and color to create atmosphere and express emotion in her art.
 • Jordan Miller is an intuitive mixed media artist working in an abstract style to create emotional self aware works of art.
 • Sari Habiluk is an intuitive abstract artist working in acrylics. Her vibrant colour palette translates over multiple styles evoking a sense of whimsy and experimentation.

4,956,422 people. 673 marches. 80 countries.
Women's Health Clinic (WHC) needs your help!
Filmmakers have set up a portal at http://whywemarch.film/ for women to submit videos answering these questions:
Why did you march?
Who did you march with?
What’s one issue you think is really important for women in your country?
Submit your stories/pictures which will be used alongside the many wonderful images generated on the 21st of January 2017 to create a “crowd sourced” film that speaks to the diverse challenges and opportunities for women around the globe.
We plan to premiere the film on International Women’s Day - March 8, 2018!

Communities March for Peace and BBQ
Meet at 5:30 pm at Orioles Community Centre, 444 Burnell St., OR NW Corner of Sherbrook and Broadway. The Marches will wind up at Central Park at 7 pm with a community BBQ and free live concert by JD and the Sunshine Band!

Hundreds of people from the seven West Central communities will come together to say 'no more violence' in our homes, on our streets or in our communities. Violence has touched many of our lives and it is time to support each other as we work to stop the cycle.
The March is being put on by community organization Peace Partners that provide help to families, youth, adults and seniors. They will be on hand with information about resources.
So bring your drums, signs and noise makers, and help us show the community that they are not alone as we walk together towards peace!
