Halloween Fun at Indian and Métis Friendship Centre

The Indian and Métis Friendship Centre at 45 Robinson Street will hold a Halloween party because many parents are too frightened to let their children roam from door to door.

The centre is asking the public for help collecting candy for the kids.

Candies or treats can be dropped off at 45 Robinson Street.

Programming Director Nancy Flett said, "They still get to wear their costume when they come here to the centre, so it's a good thing."

Saturday night will mark one week since the area was rocked by three shootings within 35 minutes.

Two men were shot and killed in the spree.  A 13-year-old girl was also shot and seriously injured.  The shootings took place on Stella Walk, Dufferin Avenue and Boyd Avenue.

There is a massive police presence in the area as they continue their search for suspects.  They have also set up a mobile command centre.

UW Valedictorian Erin Larson, thank you

Come out on October 28 to the Bulman Centre at 1:00 p. m. to say thank you to UW Valedictorian Erin Larson.

Institute for Women's and Gender Studies and the UWSA LGBT* Centre are joining forces to host a casual shindig to make sure Erin knows how much they appreciate her standing up to homophobia and speaking truth to power.

They greatly admire her courage, and want to provide her with support as there's been public feedback that has been less than positive.

Not everyone may agree with Erin's choice, but all of us must agree that to have used this opportunity start discussions all across the country about whether or not UW did the right thing, and whether or not our politicians are standing up for human rights, took moxie.

Many are proud of you Erin for making this choice!

So, if you feel the same, here's your chance to thank her.

If you can't make it, send an email at iwgs@uwinnipeg.ca
OR to lgbtctr@uwsa.ca
and they'll print it and pass it on to her on Thursday.

Wrecking Ball II: Civic Election 2010: The State of Our City

Not satisfied with the theatrics of the Sam and Judy show to date?

Winnipeg writers, actors, and directors are leaping to the stage for a one-night only event of piping hot political theatre, as Wrecking Ball II swings into action!

Check it out on Monday, October 25, at Prairie Theatre Exchange, Unit Y300 – 393 Portage Avenue, from 8:00 p. m. to 10:00 p. m.

Pay What You Can at the Door!

Will our writers come up with a second idea for Judy’s 2% campaign?
Will “The Buck Stops Here” Sam be handed yet more names to blame for his every shortcoming?
Do our crystal ball gazers see us actually riding a dedicated busway, bike routes free of protesters, dizzy from traffic circles, or do we all end up with a police chopper in every port?

A hand-picked draft of playwrights, including Bruce McManus, Sarah Constible, Al Rae, Debbie Patterson and Jane Testar, will create brief plays inspired by the civic election.
The Wrecking Ball’s only goal is to challenge and provoke.
All the plays will be no more than a week old, so you know the theatre’s gonna smell fresh!

Proceeds will support the future Winnipeg Performing Arts Lodge, a retirement community now in the planning stages for Manitoba musicians, dancers, actors, playwrights, and directors.

Aqua Books: Raise a Little Hell

Come to Aqua Books, 274 Garry Street, on Saturday, October 30 at 7:00 pm for a fun filled time, Raise a Little Hell: An Evening of Kick-Ass Literature.

It's guaranteed to get you in the mood for Halloween.

Thriller-action fiction from 2 of Winnipeg's experts on the subject: Winnipeg's Literary Arts Ambassador Michael Van Rooy and U of M professor of horror literature and film, (and video game scholar) David Annandale.

Readings will be accompanied by the sweet serenades of Winnipeg punk metal band, Rockwood.

Michael Van Rooy’s writing is fast-paced and highly entertaining with a mix of quirky humour and dry wit.  Spine-tingling moments alternate with edge-of-your-seat action in his Monty Haaviko crime thriller series.

David Annandale's Jen Blaylock series follows Canada's most notorious rogue soldier on a mission to avenge the murder of her family by a multinational arms dealer.  With epic action-movie scenes rendered on the page, his writing grips even the most distracted gamer.

Rockwood contributes the perfect soundtrack for the most desperate action hero.  Their first CD, City Lights, was recorded last year and features punk legend Mike Herrera.

Feed Babies Through Hunger For Hope

Corus Radio Winnipeg – CJOB, POWER 97 and 99.1 GROOVE FM - have recently made a long term commitment to Winnipeg Harvest to raise $100,000 a year to help eradicate child hunger in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg Harvest feeds approximately 49,000 individuals each week – half of them children.

Despite the generous food donations by individuals and businesses in Manitoba, there is never enough baby/infant formula to meet the demand. As a result, Harvest has an annual cash operating cost of $100,000 designated strictly for the purchase of formula.

The goal of “Hunger for Hope” is to cover this cost and, hopefully, establish an endowment fund that will cover this cost many years into the future.

Please help them feed babies.
