At Aqua Books on Friday, February 4, Kelly Hughes will interview former attorney general Roland Penner and world record-holder Don Starkell, from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm. There'll be music by acappella group Those Guys
Roland Penner was Chairperson of Manitoba’s new legal aid system, former Attorney-General and Minister for Constitutional Affairs. He served as Dean at the Faculty of Law at the University of Manitoba 1989-1994, and for his accomplishments was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 2000. He is also the author of an award-winning memoir, A Glowing Dream.
Don Starkell set out in 1980, with his two sons, Dana and Jeff, on an epic canoe journey from Winnipeg to Belem, Brazil. He recounted his perilous two year journey in the book Paddle to the Amazon. In 1990, Don embarked on another epic adventure, tracing the Northwest Passage by kayak. He would lose the tops of his fingers and some of his toes to frostbite. Don suffered serious burns when his Elmwood home burned down this past March.
Those Guys' members, Sheldon Atts, Dexter Barcellano, Ben Campbell, Mike Engstrom, Derek Leenhouts, Bernie Pastorin, Mac Taruc and Jeremy Walmsley, have quickly garnered a reputation for entertaining audiences with musically astute performances of many original arrangements, with lively vocal percussion and entrancing harmonies.
Upcoming appearances include "An Evening with Those Guys" at The Academy on
March 13.
In April they will be going to Banff to perform at the Rocky Mountain Music Festival.
